Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by immune activation in response to viral spread, in severe cases leading to the development of cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) and increased mortality. Despite its importance in prognosis, the pathophysiological mechanisms of CSS in COVID-19 remain to be defined. Towards this goal, we analyzed cytokine profiles and their interrelation in regard to anti-cytokine treatment with tocilizumab in 98 hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Scratch formation on glass surfaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon induced by plastic deformation, often accompanied by radial, lateral or median cracks with consequent chipping and brittle fracture caused during and after the event of dynamic abrasion instigated by shear stress by a harder material. This paper addresses the fundamental aspect of scratch formation on soda-lime-silica (SLS) glass surfaces. A constructive combination of surface-sensitive characterization tools, including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and instrumented indentation technique (IIT), helped to investigate the structural cause of generation of visible scratches on SLS glass surfaces.

The model of infrarenal aortocaval fistula (ACF) has recently gained new interest in its use to investigate cardiac pathophysiology. Since in previous investigations the development of congestive heart failure (CHF) was inconsistent and started to develop earliest 8-10 weeks after fistula induction using a 18G needle, this project aimed to induce a predictable degree of CHF within a definite time period using a modified approach. An aortocaval fistula was induced in male Wistar rats using a 16G needle as a modification of the former 18G needle-technique described by Garcia and Diebold.

Randomized evaluation of octreotide vs prochlorperazine for ED treatment of migraine headache.

A total of 5 male volunteers were enrolled. Eight of the 10 total blood ethanol level measurements were drawn after skin preparation with Kendall WEBCOL Alcohol Preps (APP) containing 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Repeated exposure to ethanol has previously been shown to induce alterations in both midbrain dopamine and dynorphin systems. The aim of this study was to investigate functional changes in the sensitivity of dynorphin/kappa-receptor systems following repeated ethanol administration, using dopamine as an indirect marker. The effects of kappa-opioid receptor ligands on dopamine release in the rat nucleus accumbens were investigated following repeated ethanol administration (2 g/kg body weight, twice daily for 7 days).

Introduction: The emphasis on publications for promotion in academic medicine would lead one to the theory that authorship numbers would increase proportionally with this emphasis. To investigate authorship trends across a number of periodicals, we performed a descriptive study comparing two full years of published articles spaced ten years apart from five medical journals.

Methods: Physician reviewers each reviewed all articles of one medical journal for the 1995 and 2005 publication years.

Does the clinical use of ethanol-based hand sanitizer elevate blood alcohol levels? A prospective study.

Background: Ethanol-based hand sanitizers (EBHSs) are used in most health care facilities in the United States. Infection control personnel advocate the use of generous quantities of EBHS before and after contact with patients. Although it is assumed that little systemic absorption of ethanol occurs during EBHS use, many alcohols are absorbed to varying degrees via the transdermal route.

Proposal of a sequential treatment methodology for the safe reuse of oil sludge-contaminated soil.

In this study sequential steps were used to treat and immobilize oil constituents of an oil sludge-contaminated soil. Initially, the contaminated soil was oxidized by a Fenton type reaction (13 wt% for H(2)O(2); 10mM for Fe(2+)). The oxidative treatment period of 80 h was carried out under three different pH conditions: 20 h at pH 6.

Routine management of geriatric problems often raises ethical problems, particularly regarding autonomy of the old person. The carers or children may be unaware of the sensitivity of role reversal in dealing with the financial affairs; the need for a residential carer may compromise the old person's privacy. Attending a day centre confers much benefit, but one must understand the old person's resistance to change in the proposal of a new daily regimen.

Planning care for non-oncologic terminal illness in advanced age.

Due to the increase in longevity today, advanced illness in the elderly exists together with severe disability and often dementia that generally become less responsive to known treatment. This leads to repeated admissions to an internal ward in a general hospital, which results not only in a lack of treatment continuity but also in inappropriate management resulting in over- or under-treatment. Towards the end of their lives, the treatment problems of non-oncologic elderly patients with advanced diseases stem from a number of factors: multiple pathology, difficulty in predicting irreversibility, staff reluctance to discontinue active specific treatment and resort to palliative care only, and the lack of a framework to ensure continuity of treatment in the community or hospital.

Effects of single and dual administration of cocaine and ethanol on opioid and ORL1 receptor expression in rat CNS: an autoradiographic study.

The co-abuse of cocaine and ethanol is common among human addicts and has been reported to produce a stronger increase of euphoria as compared to either drug given alone. Both cocaine and ethanol increase the extracellular dopamine concentration in the nucleus accumbens, a terminal region in the mesolimbic dopamine pathway. In addition, both cocaine and ethanol affect the endogenous opioid system, which in turn alters the activity of the mesolimbic dopamine pathway.
