Background: Pleural effusions are challenging to diagnose, with approximately 20-50% of malignant effusions not diagnosed by cytology. Human epididymal protein 4 (HE4) may be useful in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusions. In serum, this biomarker shows false-positive results in some benign diseases.

Introduction: Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are often underrepresented in cohorts, creating uncertainty about the natural history and prognostic factors of this subgroup. Our goal was to describe the SPOCCAT (Severe COPD: Prospective Observational study of COPD in Catalonia) study protocol.

Material And Methods: SPOCCAT is a non-interventional, multicenter, prospective cohort study of patients with severe COPD (FEV% predicted < 50%).

The proper clinical approach to a wide range of disorders relies on the availability of accurate, reproducible laboratory results for sexual steroids measured using methods with a high specificity and sensitivity. The chemiluminescent immunoassays currently available have analytical limitations with significant clinical implications. This position statement reviews the current limitations of laboratory techniques for the measurement of estradiol and testosterone and their impact on diverse clinical scenarios.

In this study, we present an 18-month serological follow-up of 294 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The aim was to assess the dynamics of serological response and its correlation with clinical worsening, as well as to describe clinical worsening determinants. Results of the study showed an early immunoglobulin M response, which clearly diminished starting at 4 months, but nonetheless, a small group of patients remained positive.

In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, the recommended minimum requirement for an endoscopy-based mediastinal staging procedure is sampling the largest lymph node (LN) in right and left inferior paratracheal, and subcarinal stations. We aimed to analyze the percentage of cases where the largest LN in each mediastinal station was malignant in a cohort of NSCLC patients with mediastinal metastases diagnosed in the lymphadenectomy specimen. Furthermore, we investigated the sensitivity of a preoperative staging procedure in a hypothetical scenario where only the largest LN of each station would have been sampled.

Background And Objectives: In patients with lung cancer (LC) and endobronchial lesion, the optimal sequence for collecting bronchial aspirate, before (BASpre) or after the biopsy (BASpost) is not yet established. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of BASpre with BASpost.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective study of patients with LC and endobronchial lesion undergoing bronchoscopy with bronchial biopsy and BASpre and BASpost samples.

Man-made mineral fibers are produced using inorganic materials and are widely used as thermal and acoustic insulation. These basically include continuous fiberglass filaments, glass wool (fiberglass insulation), stone wool, slag wool and refractory ceramic fibers. Likewise, in the last two decades nanoscale fibers have also been developed, among these being carbon nanotubes with their high electrical conductivity, mechanical resistance and thermal stability.

Background: In 2002, a voluntary registry of occupational respiratory diseases was initiated in the test phase in Asturias, Catalonia, and Navarre (Spain). Based on data from the fully implemented voluntary registry, we assessed the differences in the incidence and characteristics of the diseases reported in the three regions studied and compared them with those notified to the compulsory official system.

Methods: Physicians whose daily practice includes patients with occupational respiratory diseases were invited to participate.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic acquired disorder of unknown pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether MCS patients present brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and psychometric scale changes after a chemical challenge. This procedure was performed with chemical products at non-toxic concentrations in 8 patients diagnosed with MCS and in their healthy controls.

We report the case of a 40-year-old woman who developed occupational asthma following exposure to chromium and nickel in the nickel-plating section of a metalworks company. Skin prick tests for specific antibodies proved positive for nickel chloride at a concentration of 1 mg/mL and negative for potassium dichromate. The specific bronchial provocation test confirmed the diagnosis of occupational asthma due to exposure to chromium and nickel.
