Two patients with acute transverse myelitis were evaluated by both CT myelography and magnetic resonance. Computed tomographic myelography showed fusiform cord enlargement involving several levels; one patient had a subtotal block in the thoracic spine. Magnetic resonance displayed similar findings of cord enlargement.

Meticulous radiographic delineation of the small structures in this region, coupled with endoscopic evaluation, provides detailed preoperative information regarding morphology and pathology. This information has led to more focused endoscopic surgical procedures, which have dramatically reduced patient morbidity.

Respiratory abnormalities were present in 85%, the majority caused by a primary problem of the pulmonary system, such as small thoracic cage or obstructed airway. Three patients had hypoxemia, recurrent cyanotic spells, and episodes of respiratory distress explainable only by cervicomedullary cord compression; in each patient, respiratory problems were alleviated by decompressive surgery.

Mammary localizations of non-hodgkinian malignant lymphomas (NHML) are rare. They occur in three different contexts: isolated tumor of the primary mammary lymphoma, initial "first manifestation" tumor of a diffuse lymphomatous disease, or else a mammary tumor occurring during the course of a known NHML. Four cases of mammary localization of NHML are reported.

More than 50% still had polypoid changes of the maxillary sinus mucosa. No correlation was found between the degree of the patient's symptoms and the degree of the maxillary sinus pathology or the patency of the naso-antral window.

Since this view seemed contrary to our experience, we reviewed 19 patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome diagnosed from 1966 to 1983. Thirteen patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome were diagnosed before 6 months of age and followed for more than 2 years (mean: 10 years).

First, assays of plasma lipids or cultured skin fibroblasts or amniocytes permit precise diagnosis of persons affected by the disease, as well as prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection. Second, the general nature of the enzymatic defect has been identified and the ALD gene has been mapped to the q28 segment of the X-chromosome.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is currently the optimal neuroradiologic technique for visualizing the anterior and posterior commissure for defining the AC-PC line. CT is the optimal technique for electrode and probe guidance during stereotactic thalamotomy. Various possibilities of transferring or overlying MRI and CT are outlined which in some future might result in more refined methods of CT-MRI guidance for stereotactic surgery.

This paper reports our experience in performing the entire stereotactic surgical procedure with a CT scanner, which shows that target shifting can occur as the probe approaches the target. Therefore, when sampling of small targets or specific sites within larger targets is desired. CT confirmation of the probe's position ensures that the specific area seen on CT is biopsied.

The program allows information to be analyzed in two different display formats. One format is that of multiplanar reconstruction of the eye and orbit, including an "oblique CT cube" image.

With 10(-7) M concentrations of Gd3+ delivered to the tumor target, a small but reproducible difference in proton relaxation times (T1S) was observed in excised tumors. Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of animals, however, failed to show significant contrast enhancement of the tumor; by comparison, gamma camera images with 153Gd-labeled specific antibody did permit clear tumor visualization without subtraction.

Endogenously depressed patients and psychiatric controls from three centers were evaluated, when not taking medications, and studied for plasma cortisol and beta-endorphin levels. Plasma samples were taken at four time points over one hour, on the basal day, and 16 hours after 1 mg of dexamethasone.

CT scanning was performed in 5 outbred New Zealand white male rabbits before and at 4, 7, 9 and 13 (in 3 animals) days after surgical implantation of 3 X 10(5) viable VX-2 tumor cells in the frontoparietal lobes. The CT studies were correlated with gross pathology in each.

Two patients were young women using oral contraceptives; another patient had lateral sinus thrombosis complicating mastoiditis; a fourth patient developed superior sagittal sinus thrombosis following hip surgery. Improvements in CT diagnosis, including the use of thin sections for evaluation of the deep venous structures and lateral sinuses complemented by multiplanar reconstruction or direct coronal scanning, are discussed.

Two groups of patients, 25 with substantial spinal trauma and 25 with 'failed back' syndrome had 2-D and 3-D like displays processed by the Cemax 1000 system. The goal was to objectify whether the adjunct of 3-D imaging was truly valuable diagnostically.
