Background: Mediators released by alveolar macrophages, as well as by T cells, play an important part in modulating local immune processes in sarcoidosis. Among alveolar macrophage secretory products, arachidonic acid metabolites are known to regulate inflammatory and immune reactions. If the prevalence of sick building syndrome (SBS) is estimated before intervention begins, then a reduction in the estimate may later be used to measure success of the intervention, and in particular, those efforts toward improving air quality. However, the measure of success will be distorted if factors other than air quality affect the SBS prevalence estimate. In this study the background prevalence of SBS was estimated and study factors identified that alone affected the estimate.

To evaluate if dysfunction of the EA causes asthma-like symptoms, we assessed bronchial and EA responsiveness to inhaled histamine in 441 patients who presented with at least one of three key symptoms--cough, wheeze, dyspnoea--but had neither documented asthma nor bronchial obstruction. The histamine concentrations causing a 20% fall in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (PC20FEV1) and a 25% fall in maximal mid-inspiratory flow (PC25MIF50) were used as respective thresholds of bronchial and EA responsiveness.

Toxin-induced changes in the levels of 18 low molecular weight endogenous urinary metabolites were assessed using a simple semi-quantitative scoring system. These scores were used as input to an artificial neural network, the use of which has been explored as a means of predicting the class of toxin.
