Background: Cellular diversity of the lung endothelium has not been systematically characterized in humans. We provide a reference atlas of human lung endothelial cells (ECs) to facilitate a better understanding of the phenotypic diversity and composition of cells comprising the lung endothelium.

Methods: We reprocessed human control single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) data from 6 datasets.

Comparing corneal outcome between femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and conventional phaco surgery in Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy patients: a randomized pilot study with 6mo follow up.

Aim: To compare the corneal outcome in Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy (FED) patients between femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and conventional phaco surgery (CPS).

Methods: This was a randomized controlled study comparing one eye surgery by FLACS and the contralateral eye operated by CPS (stop and chop technique) in FED patients. Central corneal thickness, corneal light backscatter, corneal densitometry, and central corneal endothelial cell count and hexagonality (noncontact endothelial cell microscope), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were assessed preoperatively and at day 1, 40, and 180 postoperatively.

A comparison of nutritional value of native and alien food plants for a critically endangered island flying-fox.

Habitat loss and alteration are two of the biggest threats facing insular flying-foxes. Altered habitats are often re-vegetated with introduced or domestic plant species on which flying-foxes may forage. However, these alien food plants may not meet the nutritional requirements of flying-foxes.

Characteristics of Sexual and Gender Minority Caregivers of People With Dementia.

Given what little is known about the experiences of sexual and gender minority (SGM) caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), the aim of the current study was to describe psychosocial measures among these caregivers. We used an online survey and social media recruitment strategies. Of 286 caregivers, the majority were gay men.

Over two field seasons during 2014-15, 35 long-nosed potoroos (Potorous tridactylus) were captured in state forests in South Eastern New South Wales for translocation to Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay Territory, Australia. Animals were anesthetized for physical examination and collection of samples to assess general health and screen for select diseases identified during a disease risk assessment. Morphologic, hematologic, and biochemical parameters were determined, and parasites were identified where possible.

An evolutionary arms race has been ongoing between retroviruses and their primate hosts for millions of years. Within the last century, a zoonotic transmission introduced the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1), a retrovirus, to the human population that has claimed the lives of millions of individuals and is still infecting over a million people every year. To counteract retroviruses such as this, primates including humans have evolved an innate immune sensor for the retroviral capsid lattice known as TRIM5α.

Children are infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as often as adults, but with fewer symptoms. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS) in children (MIS-C), with symptoms similar to Kawasaki syndrome, was described in young minors testing positive for COVID-19. The United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defined MIS-C as occurring in <21-year-olds, triggering hundreds of PubMed-listed papers.

Time spent outdoors in childhood is associated with reduced risk of myopia as an adult.

Myopia (near-sightedness) is an important public health issue. Spending more time outdoors can prevent myopia but the long-term association between this exposure and myopia has not been well characterised. We investigated the relationship between time spent outdoors in childhood, adolescence and young adulthood and risk of myopia in young adulthood.

Co-created health education intervention among older African American women living with hypertension.

Introduction: African Americans over the age of 60 years face disproportionate risk of developing hypertension, which can be mitigated with lifestyle changes. This study examines the acceptability and cost of a patient-centered, co-created health education intervention with older African Americans living with hypertension.

Methods: Twenty women participated in this study that included four weekly, two-hour group sessions centered on hypertension knowledge and calibration of home blood pressure monitors, stress and interpersonal relationship management, sleep and pain management, and healthy eating.

A proteomics approach for the identification of cullin-9 (CUL9) related signaling pathways in induced pluripotent stem cell models.

CUL9 is a non-canonical and poorly characterized member of the largest family of E3 ubiquitin ligases known as the Cullin RING ligases (CRLs). Most CRLs play a critical role in developmental processes, however, the role of CUL9 in neuronal development remains elusive. We determined that deletion or depletion of CUL9 protein causes aberrant formation of neural rosettes, an in vitro model of early neuralization.

Testudines are susceptible to inversion and self-righting using their necks, limbs or both, to generate enough mechanical force to flip over. We investigated how shell morphology, neck length and self-righting biomechanics scale with body mass during ontogeny in , which uses neck-powered self-righting. We found that younger turtles flipped over twice as fast as older individuals.

Risdiplam in Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Background: Type 1 spinal muscular atrophy is a rare, progressive neuromuscular disease that is caused by low levels of functional survival of motor neuron (SMN) protein. Risdiplam is an orally administered, small molecule that modifies pre-messenger RNA splicing and increases levels of functional SMN protein.

Methods: We report the results of part 1 of a two-part, phase 2-3, open-label study of risdiplam in infants 1 to 7 months of age who had type 1 spinal muscular atrophy, which is characterized by the infant not attaining the ability to sit without support.

Effect of intracorporeal urinary diversion on the incidence of benign ureteroenteric stricture after cystectomy.

Objectives: To compare ureteroenteric stricture rates after radical cystectomy in patients who undergo an intracorporeal urinary diversion versus other surgical approaches.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed health records of all patients who underwent cystectomy with urinary diversion at Mayo Clinic Hospital (Phoenix, AZ, USA) from 1 January 2007 through 1 January 2018. Ureteroenteric stricture was identified by surveillance imaging.

Smarthealth technology study protocol to improve relationships between older adults with dementia and family caregivers.

Aim: The aim of this study is to develop a Smarthealth system of monitoring, modelling, and interactive recommendation solutions (for caregivers) for in-home dementia patient care that focuses on caregiver-patient relationships.

Design: This descriptive study employs a single-group, non-randomized trial to examine functionality, effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of the novel Smarthealth system.

Methods: Thirty persons with Alzheimer's Disease or related dementia and their family caregivers (N = 30 dyads) will receive and install Smarthealth technology in their home.

Objective: Dysferlinopathy is a muscular dystrophy with a highly variable clinical presentation and currently unpredictable progression. This variability and unpredictability presents difficulties for prognostication and clinical trial design. The Jain Clinical Outcomes Study of Dysferlinopathy aims to establish the validity of the North Star Assessment for Limb Girdle Type Muscular Dystrophies (NSAD) scale and identify factors that influence the rate of disease progression using NSAD.

Clinical and laboratory evaluation of patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia treated with high-titer convalescent plasma.

Here, we report on a phase IIa study to determine the intubation rate, survival, viral clearance, and development of endogenous Abs in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia treated with convalescent plasma (CCP) containing high levels of neutralizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 Abs. Radiographic and laboratory evaluation confirmed all 51 treated patients had COVID-19 pneumonia. Fresh or frozen CCP from donors with high titers of neutralizing Abs was administered.
