Morphologically similar cockroaches in the subfamilies Panesthiinae and Geoscapheinae (Blattaria: Blaberidae) display contrasting feeding habits, behaviour and biogeographical distributions. Panesthiinae, found throughout Asia and Australia, all live in and feed on decaying wood that they burrow into. Geoscapheinae are restricted to Australia and construct and live in burrows in the soil, where they feed on dry leaves taken from the surface.

The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) and to compare it with gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and erythrocyte mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in regard to distribution in the general population; the dose response relationship between alcohol consumption and biomarkers; and the effect of gender, age, body mass index (BMI) and smoking.
Method: In a cross-sectional health survey in northeast Germany (1997-2001), a sample of 7,008 men and women aged 20-79 years was drawn, following stratification by age and gender.
A detailed theoretical formulation of the primary and secondary chromatic aberrations of electron-optical systems with a straight optic axis is outlined. To simplify the mathematical expenditure only systems composed of magnetic round lenses and magnetic and electrostatic quadrupoles are taken into account. By appropriately arranging these elements, it is possible to construct feasible electron-optical analogues of light-optical achromats and apochromats.

The effects of neonatal sympathectomy of donors or recipients on posttransplantation arterial pressure were investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) by renal transplantation experiments. Conscious mean arterial pressure (MAP) and renal vascular resistance were 136 +/- 1 mmHg and 15.5 +/- 1.

A paucity of information exists to characterize the relationship between the health status of elderly people and their physical environment. The Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) is a multicenter study of the distribution of dementia among community-dwelling and institutionalized Canadians aged 65 years and older. The study also provides the opportunity to examine issues such as the physical environment which may be related to the health of elderly people.

Dieldrin, HCB and DDE were the most frequently detected organochlorines, occurring in 70-100% of samples collected. Alpha and gamma chlordane were also reasonably common and occurred in more than 30% of the samples.

A feasible electrostatic corrector (ECO) is outlined and the principle of the electrostatic correction is elucidated by means of a light-optical analogue. The ECO compensates for the chromatic and the spherical aberration of charged-particle lenses and reduces the resolution limit of a special LVSEM (low-voltage scanning electron microscope) from 6 nm to 1.4 nm.

Here we present the basic characteristics of the slice in terms of physiology (intracellular and extracellular recordings, including current source density analysis), pharmacology (including glutamate receptor involvement), and anatomy (gross anatomy, Nissl, parvalbumin immunocytochemistry, and tract tracing with 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate). Thalamocortical transmission in this preparation (the "primary" slice) involves both alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-proprionic acid/kainate and N-methyl-D-aspartate-type glutamate receptors that appear to mediate monosynaptic inputs to layers 3-4 of ACx.

High resolution comparative genomic hybridisation (HR-CGH) is a diagnostic tool in our clinical cytogenetics laboratory. The present survey reports the results of 253 clinical cases in which 47 abnormalities were detected. Among 144 dysmorphic and mentally retarded subjects with a normal conventional karyotype, 15 (10%) had small deletions or duplications, of which 11 were interstitial.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: The purpose was to detect chromosome abnormalities in dysmorphic and mentally retarded individuals with normal karyotypes by means of comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH).
Material And Methods: One hundred and forty-four individuals with normal karyotype underwent CGH analysis with a new detection technique where fixed limits are replaced by dynamic standard reference intervals. This method provides improved resolution and thereby detects minor chromosome abnormalities.
A diffraction-limited laser interacts with a plasma whose conditions are uniform on the scale of the focused laser spot. Two distinct, narrow waves are observed in the backscattered spectrum with phase velocities of v(phi)/v(e) = 1.4+/-0.

Methods: Rats were syngeneically transplanted with a kidney and bilaterally nephrectomized.
Stimulation of the medial geniculate body in an auditory thalamocortical slice elicits a short-latency current sink in the middle cortical layers, as would be expected following activation of thalamocortical relay neurons. However, corticothalamic neurons can have axon collaterals that project to the middle layers, thus, a middle-layer current sink could also result from antidromic activation of corticothalamic neurons and their axon collaterals. The likelihood of thalamic stimulation activating corticothalamic neurons would be reduced substantially if the corticothalamic pathway was not well preserved in the slice, and/or if the threshold for antidromic activation was significantly higher than for orthodromic activation.

The possible role of the neurotrophic factor S100 beta, which is suspected to regulate regeneration of serotonergic synapses, has not been investigated in depressive disorders. The S100 beta concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid was measured in 11 patients with the current diagnosis of mild or moderate depressive episodes (DSM-IV) and in 11 matched control patients.

Graft loss from chronic rejection has become the major obstacle to the long-term success of whole organ transplantation. In cardiac allografts, chronic rejection is manifested as a diffuse and accelerated form of arteriosclerosis, termed cardiac allograft vasculopathy. It has been suggested that T-cell recognition of processed alloantigens (allopeptides) presented by recipient antigen-presenting cells through the indirect pathway of allorecognition plays a critical role in the development and progression of chronic rejection.

The dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area and medial substantia nigra (VTA/mSN) projecting to the limbic forebrain and prefrontal cortex have long been postulated to play a major role in cognitive and behavioral effects of stress. In this study, the effects of a chronic stressor (prolonged exposure to cold) on the spontaneous activity of DA neurons in the VTA/mSN were examined. Extracellular single-unit recordings of DA neurons were performed in rats following a 17-day continuous exposure to a cold (4 degrees C) environment.
