Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of high-titer intravenous respiratory syncytial virus immune globulin (RSVIG) in the treatment of children at high risk for severe RSV infection who were hospitalized with proven RSV.
Methods: Infants and young children younger than 2 years with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, or prematurity (<32 weeks' gestational age), hospitalized with a history of lower respiratory tract infection (LRI) of less than 4 days, were enrolled in this study. Patients were randomized in a blinded fashion to receive either 1500 mg/kg RSVIG or placebo in equal volumes.

In order to impact morbidity and mortality of adolescents, the health care provider must not only determine the risk status of the teenager but also take time to provide appropriate guidance and interventions. We have developed the West Virginia University Adolescent Risk Score, which is more inclusive than similar screening techniques and requires an 8 +/- 3-minute interview. This format facilitates specific guidance, provides documentation of risk status, and is readily accessible on future visits.

This scenario provides the vehicle for a discussion of three problems which can be precipitated by child neglect, specifically kwashiorkor, central pontine myelinolysis, and intellectual repercussions of malnutrition.

In these patients tachycardia is maintained due to anterograde conduction through a slow pathway and retrograde conduction to the atrium via a fast pathway. We present herein our experience in ablation of the slow pathway.

The micromammal species represent the late Biharian (Mimomys savini zone), and the lithic objects represent pre-Acheulean technology (Mode 1) and comes from the TD6 level below the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary. The Gran Dolina hominid fossils cannot be comfortably accommodated in any of the defined Homo species.

The use of high-dose chemotherapy has been limited by secondary myelosuppression. We report the use of intensive and short-duration chemotherapy in patients with RML who received granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) instead of hematological support and salvage with bone marrow transplantation or infusion of peripheral blood stem cells.

To assess the efficiency and toxicity of alternating combination chemotherapy plus interferon-alpha-2b (IFN) in the treatment of poor prognosis multiple myeloma, we began a prospective clinical trial. The study involved 103 previously untreated patients with poor prognosis: Stage III, haemoglobin below 8.5 g/dl, beta 2-microglobulin > 5.

Patients were treated initially with involved field radiotherapy 40-55 Gy (40 patients received 45 Gy) followed by six cycles of chemotherapy which consisted of CEOP-Bleo (cyclophosphamide, epirubin, vincristine, prednisone and bleomycin). Complete response was achieved in 41 cases (95%).

Thirty were of lower socioeconomic status and 30 were of higher socioeconomic status, as determined by the type of insurance. All had previously learned mite avoidance measures at the time of diagnosis.

The present study was conducted to determine whether behaviorally accelerated development of tolerance to the disruptive effects of ethanol on rotarod performance paralleled the development of tolerance to ethanol-induced diuresis and to determine the effect of pre- and post-training ethanol administration on the development of tolerance to both of these effects. Male Wistar rats were treated with ethanol (2 g kg-1 day-1, ip) over a period of 5 weeks under one of the following schemes: ethanol injections before training (pre-training ethanol group) or after training (post-training ethanol group). Control animals received 0.

The present study analyzes the effect of indomethacin on the development of tolerance to the diuretic effect of ethanol. Male Wistar rats were treated with ethanol (2 g kg-1 day-1, ip) over a period of 4 weeks and the effect of ethanol on diuresis was assessed weekly. A significant tolerance to the diuretic effect of ethanol was detected after 3 weeks of treatment.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTwo hundred and thirty-six Guatemalan children aged 2-14 y were examined for subclinical vitamin A deficiency by use of conjunctival impression cytology (CIC). The feasibility of the technique and quality of a modified touch procedure were assessed. Neither lid speculum nor physical restraint in the form of a papoose board was used.

One impression was taken from the temporal bulbar aspect of each eye, fasting serum vitamin A levels were then drawn, 480 RE of oil-based retinyl palmitate was given, and a 5-h postdosing vitamin A level was drawn (RDR procedure). For a 20% RDR cutoff, the sensitivity of CIC was 23% with a specificity of 80% and a positive predictive value of 9% (n = 213 children).
