Tinea corporis by Nannizia gypsea: delayed diagnosis due to unusual presentation.

Fungal infections by dermatophytes can present with unusual clinical manifestations, which can cause diagnostic difficulties. The authors present the case of a patient with cutaneous infection by Nanizzia gypsea, initially treated erroneously with topical corticosteroids due to a wrong diagnosis. It was cured after antifungal treatment.

Differences in cell morphometry, cell wall topography and gp70 expression correlate with the virulence of Sporothrix brasiliensis clinical isolates.

Sporotrichosis is a chronic infectious disease affecting both humans and animals. For many years, this subcutaneous mycosis had been attributed to a single etiological agent; however, it is now known that this taxon consists of a complex of at least four pathogenic species, including Sporothrix schenckii and Sporothrix brasiliensis. Gp70 was previously shown to be an important antigen and adhesin expressed on the fungal cell surface and may have a key role in immunomodulation and host response.

Use of potassium iodide in dermatology: updates on an old drug.

Potassium iodide, as a saturated solution, is a valuable drug in the dermatologist's therapeutic arsenal and is useful for the treatment of different diseases due to its immunomodulatory features. However, its prescription has become increasingly less frequent in dermatology practice. Little knowledge about its exact mechanism of action, lack of interest from the pharmaceutical industry, the advent of new drugs, and the toxicity caused by the use of high doses of the drug are some possible explanations for that.

Sporotrichosis in pregnancy: case reports of 5 patients in a zoonotic epidemic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Five cases of sporotrichosis occurring in pregnant women in a zoonotic epidemic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are described. The main clinical features, as well as the challenging therapeutic choices for this specific group of patients, are discussed.

Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis.

This report shows images of a case of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala jeanselmei in a patient who has undergone renal transplantation. The paper comments briefly on the disease and emphasizes the need to take this mycosis into account in the differential diagnosis of other dermatoses, including non-infectious dermatoses.

Infectious arthritis as the single manifestation of sporotrichosis: serology from serum and synovial fluid samples as an aid to diagnosis.

Sporotrichosis is a generally cutaneous, granulomatous, chronic and benign infection. Less frequently the disease may affect the joints. Articular involvement is usually characterized by monoarthritis in the absence of systemic symptoms, generally preceded by skin lesions, and frequently affects immunosuppressed individuals.

Sporothrix schenckii and sporotrichosis.

For a long time sporotrichosis has been regarded to have a low incidence in Brazil; however, recent studies demonstrate that not only the number of reported cases but also the incidence of more severe or atypical clinical forms of the disease are increasing. Recent data indicate that these more severe forms occur in about 10% of patients with confirmed diagnosis. The less frequent forms, mainly osteoarticular sporotrichosis, might be associated both with patient immunodepression and zoonotic transmission of the disease.
