Potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivation faces the challenge of excessive pesticide use. During processing, the disposal of large volumes of contaminated water into water bodies can result in severe environmental damage, such as fish deaths. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicological effects of chemical compounds present in the effluent from a potato-processing industry using the test organism Cyprinus carpio.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how adding CO affects the growth and biochemical traits of the microalga Tetradesmus obliquus in a hybrid algal production system (HAPS) that combines tubular photobioreactors and thin-layer cascade systems.
  • CO addition was found to enhance productivity and improve the biomass's protein, lipid, pigment, and unsaturated fatty acid content.
  • The HAPS setup demonstrates efficient CO fixation, leading to higher productivity and better-quality biomass in microalgae cultures when used in open systems.

The selection of ester-producing yeasts is difficult because these molecules evaporate quickly, are extremely unstable and may be missed during analytical manipulation. We propose an easy, fast and efficient headspace-SPME method for screening of ester-producing yeasts directly at the extraction vials (in situ HS-SPME).

The microalgae Desmodesmus subspicatus (Chlorophyta) was cultivated in a tubular photobioreactor using effluent from the wastewater treatment plant of the University of Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil to demonstrate the reactor's operation. The algae's ability to remove nutrients from wastewater and the oleaginous potential of the algae's biomass were also evaluated. Total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen were measured.
