Introduction: Each year in the UK there are 8100 new cases of malignant melanoma, and 1800 deaths, largely as a result of metastatic disease. The median survival of people with metastatic melanoma is 6 to 9 months after diagnosis, with 10% of people alive at 5 years. Chemotherapy is given with palliative rather than curative intent for metastatic disease.
