Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on how normal eyes accommodate to different visual stimuli using a clinical system called swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) at the University of Parma, Italy.
  • - Researchers examined 14 subjects' right eyes and found significant changes: as the eye accommodated, the anterior chamber depth decreased and lens thickness increased, while central corneal thickness remained unchanged.
  • - The findings suggest that the AS-OCT system is effective for high-resolution imaging of the eye's anterior segment during accommodation, with no financial conflicts reported by the authors.

Purpose: To study the characteristics of late-onset capsular block syndrome (CBS) using swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and assess morphometric variations after treatment with neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy.

Setting: Ophthalmology, University of Parma, Parma, Italy.

Design: Case series.

Article Synopsis
  • A new case of MFRP-related syndrome was reported in a 33-year-old woman with significant eye conditions, including posterior microphthalmos and retinal degeneration, followed over a 30-month period.
  • Comprehensive ophthalmological assessments and genetic testing revealed a homozygous mutation in the MFRP gene, which is linked to the observed symptoms.
  • The study also reviewed existing literature and found a diverse range of disease expression among 17 reported cases, highlighting variability in symptoms and progression despite similar genetic mutations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements using three different methods: swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), spectral-domain retinal OCT, and ultrasound pachymetry (USP).
  • The analysis involved 50 healthy volunteers and utilized statistical methods to compare CCT measurements and assess repeatability, revealing that AS-OCT provided the most consistent results.
  • Although CCT measurements from all three methods showed strong correlations, they were not identical, highlighting AS-OCT’s excellent repeatability in producing pachymetric maps.

Purpose: To report 3 cases of simultaneous Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and aphakic iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with aphakia and bullous keratopathy.

Methods: We retrospectively documented the clinical characteristics of patients before and after simultaneous DSAEK and aphakic iris-fixated IOL implantation undergoing operation between November 2008 and September 2009.

Results: None of the cases showed any intraoperative complications.
