This study was conducted to assess the effects of fumonisin B (FB) on the jejunum of pigs using a novel ex vivo model conducted in parallel with an in vivo trial. For the in vivo model, twelve male 28 to 70-days-old pigs were subjected to two treatments of six animals each: the control group, fed a basal diet (BD), and the FB group, fed the BD + 50 mg/kg FB. At 70 days, the animals were slaughtered and one jejunal sample was collected from each pig for further histopathological analyses.

The extremophyte Eutrema salsugineum (Yukon ecotype) has adapted to an environment low in available phosphate through metabolic and root-associated traits that enables it to efficiently retrieve, use, and recycle phosphorus. Efficient phosphate (Pi) use by plants would increase crop productivity under Pi-limiting conditions and reduce our reliance on Pi applied as fertilizer. An ecotype of Eutrema salsugineum originating from the Yukon, Canada, shows no evidence of decreased relative growth rate or biomass under low Pi conditions and, as such, offers a promising model for identifying mechanisms to improve Pi use by crops.

This study examines the role of the unconventional gaseous signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO) on the regulation of heart rate in the Vietnamese stick insect, Baculum extradentatum. Using nicotinamide dinucleotide hydrogen phosphate (NADPH)-diaphorase histochemistry, as well as immunohistochemistry and Western blotting with an antibody against NO synthetase (NOS), we identified the presence of NOS in hemocytes present throughout the lumen of the dorsal vessel. We propose that NO is delivered to heart muscle tissue via hemocytes circulating within the hemolymph.
