Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has notably increased since the industrial revolution, doubling N inputs to terrestrial ecosystems. This could mitigate N limitations in forests, potentially enhancing productivity and carbon sequestration. However, excessive N can lead to forest N saturation, causing issues like soil acidification, nutrient imbalances, biodiversity loss, increased tree mortality and a potential net greenhouse gas emission.

The immunohistochemical assessment of mismatch repair (MMR) proteins represents a pivotal screening tool for identifying Lynch syndrome (LS)-related cancers, as the loss of their expression often indicates MMR dysfunction associated with genetic or epigenetic alterations. Frequently, LS-related colorectal cancers present germline pathogenic variants in the or genes, which result in the simultaneous immunohistochemical loss of MLH1 and PMS2 or MSH2 and MSH6 proteins expression, respectively. Less commonly observed is the single involvement of the MSH6 or PMS2 proteins expression, indicative of the presence of germline pathogenic variants in the corresponding genes.

Glutamatergic neurotransmission system dysregulation may play an important role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, reported results on glutamatergic components across brain regions are contradictory. Here, we conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis to examine whether there are consistent glutamatergic abnormalities in the human AD brain.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers found that a higher VRF burden is linked to increased neurodegeneration and cognitive decline over time, indicating these factors work together to worsen AD.
  • * Despite VRFs and AD pathophysiology operating independently, combining treatments aimed at both could improve outcomes for individuals at risk for AD, especially in its early stages.

Objective: Aging produces changes in emotional reactivity and the retrieval of autobiographical memories. The main aim of this study was to assess age-related differences, comparing emotion induction and autobiographical memory recall using photos from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) that are thematically related to childhood.

Method: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted, with the participation of 327 individuals (168 young adults and 159 older adults) with no cognitive impairment and aged between 18 and 88 years.

The Mini Cambridge-Exeter Repetitive Thoughts Scale (Mini-CERTS) captures constructive and unconstructive aspects of repetitive thinking, but there is a need to revise and improve it given its novelty. For this reason, we present a validation and factor analysis of the Spanish version of the Mini-CERTS. Given that it is important to take cultural issues into account in instrument adaptation, we also assess its measurement invariance across Spanish ( = 430) and Peruvian ( = 394) populations.

The aim of our study was to retrospectively evaluate whether the oral administration of (M247) could increase pregnancy and live birth rates in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology procedures. Enrolled women (N = 160) were divided into two groups: treated (N = 80) or untreated (N = 80) with the probiotic strain. The odds ratio (OR) for a treated woman to have a clinical pregnancy (CP) was 1.

Natural and human-induced environmental changes deeply affected terrestrial ecosystems throughout the Holocene. Paleoenvironmental reconstructions provide information about the past and allow us to predict/model future scenarios. Among potential records, peat bogs are widely used because they present a precise stratigraphy and act as natural archives of highly diverse organic remains.

Objective: Electrophysiological techniques are emerging as an aid in identifying prognostic or therapeutic biomarkers in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), but electrophysiological assessments may be burdensome for patients. We, therefore, assessed feasibility and tolerability of multimodal peripheral non-invasive electrophysiological techniques in a cohort of patients with SMA.

Methods: We conducted a single center, longitudinal cohort study investigating the feasibility and tolerability of applying multimodal electrophysiological techniques to the median nerve unilaterally.

In the past years, neuroinflammation has been widely investigated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Evidence from animal, in vivo and post-mortem studies has shown that inflammatory changes are a common feature of the disease, apparently happening in response to amyloid-beta and tau accumulation. Progress in imaging and fluid biomarkers now allows for identifying surrogate markers of neuroinflammation in living individuals, which may offer unprecedented opportunities to better understand AD pathogenesis and progression.

Hereditary cancer syndromes account for nearly 10% of cancers even though they are often underdiagnosed. Finding a pathogenic gene variant could have dramatic implications in terms of pharmacologic treatments, tailored preventive programs, and familiar cascade testing. However, diagnosing a hereditary cancer syndrome could be challenging because of a lack of validated testing criteria or because of their suboptimal performance.

Retrospective perceptions of parental bonding may be a protective factor for emotional health. These perceptions are grounded in autobiographical memory, which plays a key role in the onset and maintenance of depressive symptomatology. The aim of the present study was to explore whether the emotional valence of autobiographical memories (positive and negative) and the dimensions of parental bonding (care and protection) have an impact on depressive symptomatology, examining the role of depressive rumination and possible age-related differences.

Growth in the global development of cities, and increasing public interest in beekeeping, has led to increase in the numbers of urban apiaries. Towns and cities can provide an excellent diet for managed bees, with a diverse range of nectar and pollen available throughout a long flowering season, and are often more ecologically diverse than the surrounding rural environments. Accessible urban honeybee hives are a valuable research resource to gain insights into the diet and ecology of wild pollinators in urban settings.
