Objective: To examine the relationship of depressive and disruptive disorders with patterns of mental health services utilization in a community sample of children and adolescents.

Method: Data were from the NIMH Methods for the Epidemiology of Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders (MECA) Study. The sample consisted of 1,285 child (ages 9-17 years) and parent/guardian pairs.

Extremely high regioselectivities were achieved in the rhodium-catalyzed low-pressure hydroformylation of 1-octene to n-nonanal with chelate bisphosphites that contain a p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene backbone (shown in the picture). It was possible to tailor the structures and ultimately the catalytic properties of these complexes using molecular modeling calculations.

A comparison of federal definitions of severe mental illness among children and adolescents in four communities.

Objective: Using data from an epidemiological survey, the study compared existing definitions of severe mental illness and serious emotional disturbance among children and adolescents to demonstrate the range of prevalence rates resulting from application of different definitions to the same population.

Methods: Three definitions of severe mental illness and serious emotional disturbance were applied to data from the Methods for the Epidemiology of Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders survey, with a sample of 1,285, conducted in 1991-1992 by the National Institute of Mental Health. The objective of the present study was to compare data on the prevalence of mental illness in Germany and the United States. For this purpose, data from the Upper Bavarian Study (UBS) and the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) are presented and compared. In both studies, personal interviews were administered to a sample of community residents.

Comparison of the 5' end of the rat and mouse cystathionine beta-synthase genes.

We have isolated and characterized a genomic fragment encompassing the first six exons and 2.6 kbp 5' flanking sequence of the rat cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) gene. A previously unknown exon approximately 3 kbp upstream of exon 1 was identified.

Inactivation of V79 cells by low-energy protons, deuterons and helium-3 ions.

Previous work by ourselves and by others has demonstrated that protons with a linear energy transfer (LET) about 30 keVmum(-1)are more effective at killing cells than doubly charged particles of the same LET. In this work we show that by using deuterons, which have about twice the range of protons with the same LET, it is possible to extend measurements of the RBE of singly charged particles to higher LET (up to 50 keVmum(-1). We report the design and use of a new arrangement for irradiating V79 mammalian cells.

Scales, diagnoses, and child psychopathology: II. Comparing the CBCL and the DISC against external validators.

Using a multimethod multistage screening procedure, the authors interviewed 201 parents and their children with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC 2.1). The ICD-10 clinical field trial for mental and behavioral disorders: results in Canada and the United States.

Objective: To help evaluate the impact of proposed revisions to the chapter on mental and behavioral disorders for ICD-10, the World Health Organization (WHO) Division of Mental Health organized an international clinical field trial to evaluate draft clinical descriptions and diagnostic guidelines. The authors compare interrater diagnostic reliability results from this field trial for clinicians in Canada and the United States of American with those from all other clinicians worldwide, as well as with those from field trials conducted to evaluate drafts of DSM-III.

Method: Two or more clinicians at each clinical center independently evaluated each patient, following a study protocol that allowed clinicians to list up to six diagnoses.

The resulting distribution of energies deposited in a small target such as the DNA helix leads to a corresponding spectrum in the severity of damage produced. So far, most information about the probable spectra of DNA lesion complexity has come from Monte Carlo studies which endeavour to model the relationship between the energy deposited in DNA and the damage induced.

Human cystathionine beta-synthase cDNA: sequence, alternative splicing and expression in cultured cells.

Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency is the major cause of homocystinuria in humans. The most frequent symptoms of homocystinuria include: dislocated optic lenses, vascular disorders, skeletal abnormalities and mental retardation. Patients with this deficiency have elevated levels of homocyst(e)ine, methionine and low cysteine in their body fluids.

In preparing for the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), the Division of Mental Health of the World Health Organization organized an international field trial to help evaluate draft clinical descriptions and diagnostic guidelines that were produced to facilitate use of the chapter dealing with mental and behavioral disorders. These clinical guidelines were prepared in equivalent versions in most of the world's widely spoken languages. The field trial aimed to obtain data that would help in assessing whether the classification fits the diagnoses made in different countries, whether it is easy to use, and whether psychiatrists after a short period of familiarization with the classification can reach agreement about their diagnoses and classification.

A phase I study of interleukin-2 in children with cancer.

Recombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2) produces clinical responses in approximately 20% of adult patients with renal cell carcinoma and melanoma, with both high-dose bolus and continuous infusion regimens. Because of the lower toxicity of continuous infusion, we elected to investigate in a Phase I trial a 5-day continuous infusion repeated for three weeks in children with malignancies refractory to standard therapy. Nineteen children with solid tumors and eight children with hematologic malignancies were entered into the study.
