Article Synopsis
  • National antenatal screening for pregnant women in England follows guidelines from the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme to identify beta thalassaemia carriers.
  • The screening uses specific criteria based on two lab values: percentage Hb A2 and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH).
  • In a study of 59,500 samples, the action criteria were validated, showing very few false positives (25) and false negatives (9), reinforcing the effectiveness of the current screening values.
