The field of medicine is constantly changing and, as healthcare providers, we are fortunate to be practicing in a time when patients are living longer and novel therapeutic options continue to evolve. However, these new advances may be associated with adverse effects that practitioners need to be aware of. Some of these impair the immune system leading to secondary immunodeficiencies (SID) that increase host susceptibility to infections and other complications.

Pollen food allergy syndrome secondary to molds and raw mushroom cross-reactivity: a case report.

Background: Pollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is an immunoglobulin E (IgE) mediated reaction that causes oropharyngeal pruritus or angioedema due to homologous proteins present in the culprit food as well as a sensitizing aeroallergen. This cross-reactivity has been well established between pollen and fruits/vegetables. Given the evolutionary similarity between all fungi; cross-reactivity between spore forming microfungi and edible macrofungi have been suggested, however only a limited number of case reports have ever been published on this phenomenon.

Telemedicine in allergy/immunology in the era of COVID-19: a Canadian perspective.

Background: In the era of COVID-19, utilization of telemedicine has dramatically increased. In addition to reduced travel times, patient expenses, and work or school days missed, telemedicine allows clinicians to provide continued care while minimizing face-to-face interactions, maintaining social distancing, and limiting potential COVID-19 exposures. Clinical Immunology and Allergy (CIA), like many specialties, has adapted to incorporate telemedicine into practice.

Early Warning Scheme of COVID-19 related Internet Public Opinion based on RVM-L Model.

Internet public opinion is affected by many factors corresponding to insufficient data in the very short period, especially for emergency events related to the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To effectively support real-time analysis and accurate prediction, this paper proposes an early warning scheme, which comprehensively considers the multiple factors of Internet public opinion and the dynamic characteristics of burst events. A hybrid relevance vector machine and logistic regression (RVM-L) model is proposed that incorporates multivariate analysis, which adopts Lagrange interpolation to fill in the gaps and improve the forecasting effect based on insufficient data for COVID-19-related events.

Systemic reactions to subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy: real-world cause and effect modelling.

Background: Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) is an effective treatment for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. However, adverse events, including life-threatening systemic reactions, may occur. The purpose of this project is to identify risk factors for systemic reactions to SCIT and to provide practice-based solutions using a quality improvement (QI) framework.

Successful olaparib desensitization using a novel one-day protocol.

Background: Olaparib is a revolutionary treatment for patients with ovarian and breast cancer. Currently, there is no established 1-day drug desensitization protocol for patients with olaparib type-1 hypersensitivity reactions despite well documented IgE-mediated adverse reactions occurring with olaparib.

Case Presentation: We report a 58-year-old female with immediate, reproducible IgE-mediated adverse reactions to olaparib tablets with implementation of a 1-day novel desensitization protocol to olaparib.

Language model-based automatic prefix abbreviation expansion method for biomedical big data analysis.

In biomedical domain, abbreviations are appearing more and more frequently in various data sets, which has caused significant obstacles to biomedical big data analysis. The dictionary-based approach has been adopted to process abbreviations, but it cannot handle ad hoc abbreviations, and it is impossible to cover all abbreviations. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes an automatic abbreviation expansion method called LMAAE (Language Model-based Automatic Abbreviation Expansion).
