Background/objectives: Incidence of vector-borne diseases, including rickettsioses and anaplasmosis, has been increasing in many parts of the world. The obligate intracellular nature of rickettsial pathogens has hindered the development of robust genetic tools for the study of gene function and the identification of therapeutic targets. Transposon mutagenesis has contributed to recent progress in the identification of virulence factors in this important group of pathogens.

Tick-borne spotted fever rickettsioses (SFRs) continue to cause severe illness and death in otherwise-healthy individuals due to lack of a timely and reliable diagnostic laboratory test. We recently identified a diagnostic biomarker for SFRs, the putative N-acetylmuramoyl-l-alanine amidase RC0497. Here, we developed a prototype laboratory test that targets RC0497 for diagnosis of SFRs.

Virus-host protein interaction is critical for successful completion of viral replication cycles. As the largest nonstructural protein (NSP) of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), NSP2 plays multiple and critical roles in viral replication, antiviral immunity, cellular tropism and virulence. An interactome of this protein with host proteins would be instrumental in full understanding of these multifunctional roles.

  • Patients who have suffered a stroke are at higher risk for developing post-stroke dementia, and the presence of serum anti-NMDA receptor autoantibodies (NMDAR1-abs) may negatively impact cognitive outcomes, particularly memory.
  • In a study using the DEMDAS cohort, researchers found that 10.2% of stroke patients were seropositive for NMDAR1-abs, but this did not correlate with overall cognitive decline.
  • However, those with NMDAR1-abs did show significantly worse performance in memory tasks and were more likely to experience memory impairment one year post-stroke, indicating a specific link between these autoantibodies and memory dysfunction.

  • Lithium is a special metal that is super important for making better rechargeable batteries because it can hold a lot of energy and works well with electricity.
  • When lithium is used in batteries, it forms a layer on its surface called the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), which makes the process of adding lithium to the battery more complicated than with regular metals.
  • To make sure batteries work well for a long time, scientists need to study how lithium is added to the battery surfaces and find ways to make this process smoother and more efficient.

Background: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) occurs in up to 50% of stroke survivors. Presence of pre-existing vascular brain injury, in particular the extent of white matter hyperintensities (WMH), is associated with worse cognitive outcome after stroke, but the role of WMH location in this association is unclear.

Aims: We determined if WMH in strategic white matter tracts explain cognitive performance after stroke.

GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis occurs in the nigrostriatal pathway in Parkinson's disease animals, yet the role of GSDMD in neuroinflammation and death of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease remains elusive. Here, our in vivo and in vitro studies demonstrated that GSDMD, as a pyroptosis executor, contributed to glial reaction and death of dopaminergic neurons across different Parkinson's disease models. The ablation of the Gsdmd attenuated Parkinson's disease damage by reducing dopaminergic neuronal death, microglial activation, and detrimental transformation.

Electrolyte plays a crucial role in ensuring stable operation of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have the potential to form a robust solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and mitigate Li dendrite growth, making them a highly promising electrolyte option. However, the principles governing the selection of diluents, a crucial component in LHCE, have not been clearly determined, hampering the advancement of such a type of electrolyte systems.
