Early results of displaced femoral neck fragility fractures treated with supercapsular percutaneous-assisted total hip arthroplasty.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the preferred treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures in select patients, although dislocation remains a concern. In some studies, the supercapsular percutaneously assisted (SuperPATH) approach has demonstrated early mobilization, short hospital stay, and low dislocation rates in primary THA, but there are little data on its use for fractures. This study describes the perioperative outcomes and early dislocation rate of SuperPATH THA for displaced femoral neck fragility fractures.

Background:: Fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal are relatively common foot injuries in elite athletes. Acute fixation with intramedullary screws is the most common operative treatment. However, the rate of nonunion and refracture after this procedure remains a concern.

A Biomechanical Comparison of Fifth Metatarsal Jones Fracture Fixation Methods.

Background: Fifth metatarsal base fractures of the metaphyseal-diaphyseal watershed junction (Jones fracture) are commonly treated with surgical fixation in athletes. Intramedullary screw fixation remains the most utilized construct, although plantar-lateral plating is an alternative. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose was to compare the mechanical strength of fracture fixation between an intramedullary screw and plantar-lateral plating.

Flipping an Undergraduate Gerontological Nursing Course: Student Perceptions.

A flipped classroom instructional method was implemented in a gerontological nursing course. Students were surveyed to evaluate their perceptions of the flipped classroom module as well as their satisfaction with it. Open-ended questions were used to explore the students' best and least favorite aspects of the format.

Open, Arthroscopic, and Percutaneous Surgical Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis: A Systematic Review.

Approximately 10% of patients with lateral epicondylitis go on to have surgical treatment; however, multiple surgical treatment options exist. The purpose of this study was to review the literature for the clinical outcomes of open, arthroscopic, and percutaneous treatment of lateral epicondylitis. The authors hypothesized that the clinical outcome of all 3 analyzed surgical treatments would be equivalent.

Plantar Plating for the Treatment of Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures in Elite Athletes.

Proximal fifth metatarsal fractures, zones II and III, are commonly treated surgically, especially in elite athletes. Intramedullary screw fixation remains the most used construct despite nonunion and refracture. High tensile forces on the plantar-lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal are difficult to control, and intramedullary screw fixation depends on ideal screw position, length, and width.

An Uncommon Case of Lower Limb Deep Vein Thrombosis with Multiple Etiological Causes.

BACKGROUND Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a type of venous thromboembolism with diverse clinical and environmental risk factors. Very few cases of DVT with multiple high risk factors have been reported. Here, we report an uncommon DVT case with multiple etiological causes, including appendicitis/appendectomy, morbid obesity, immobilization, positive phosphatidylserine IgG, and heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation.

Effect of Adenotonsillectomy on Parent-Reported Sleepiness in Children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Study Objectives: To describe parental reports of sleepiness and sleep duration in children with polysomnography (PSG)-confirmed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) randomized to early adenotonsillectomy (eAT) or watchful waiting with supportive care (WWSC) in the ChildHood Adenotonsillectomy Trial (CHAT). We hypothesized children with OSA would have a larger improvement in sleepiness 6 mo following eAT compared to WWSC.

Radiographic Evidence of Hip Microinstability in Elite Ballet.

Purpose: To determine prevalence, magnitude, and predisposing radiographic features of hip subluxation in elite ballet dancers.

Methods: A cross-sectional investigation of professional male and female ballet dancers was performed using 5 plain radiographs. A "splits" anteroposterior (AP) radiograph was performed with legs abducted parallel to the trunk in the coronal plane (splits position; grand écart facial).

Bilateral compartment syndrome of the anterior thigh following functional fitness exercises: a case report.

We present a case of delayed, acute bilateral exertional compartment syndrome of the anterior thigh induced by callisthenic exercise. Symptoms consisted of pain out of proportion to examination findings, inability to ambulate, and severe pain with knee flexion. Treatment consisted of bilateral thigh fasciotomies and supportive therapy for concomitant rhabdomyolysis.

Paraganglioma of the palatine tonsil.

Paragangliomas of the head and neck are rare. We describe the case of an 11-year-old girl who presented with an enlarged right palatine tonsil (grade 4). After a bilateral tonsillectomy, microscopic examination of the right tonsillar tissue revealed well-formed nests of polygonal epithelial cells separated by a collagenous stroma.

The Childhood Adenotonsillectomy Trial (CHAT): rationale, design, and challenges of a randomized controlled trial evaluating a standard surgical procedure in a pediatric population.

Each year, over 500,000 adenotonsillectomies (AT), mostly for the treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are performed in the US in children under 15 years of age. No definitive study, however, has been yet conducted that has rigorously evaluated the effectiveness of AT for not only improving sleep disordered breathing, but also for improving clinically relevant outcomes, such as neurocognitive function, behavior, and quality of life. The Childhood Adenotonsillectomy Trial (CHAT) was designed to assess neuropsychological and health outcomes in children randomized to receive early AT (eAT) as compared to Watchful Waiting with Supportive Care (WWSC).

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and quality of life: a meta-analysis.

Objective: 1) To assess the quality of life (QOL) in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) compared with QOL of children with chronic medical conditions, and 2) To determine QOL in children with OSA after adenotonsillectomy in short- and long-term follow-up. DATA SOURCES/REVIEW METHODS: A literature review on QOL in pediatric OSA using the PubMed database.

Results: The literature search yielded 10 articles that satisfied inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Perioperative complications of adenotonsillectomy in children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

We evaluated the rate of complications experienced by children who undergo adenotonsillectomy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), the safety of a standard anesthetic protocol for these children, and preoperative predictors of complications. Sixty-one children with OSAS, confirmed by polysomnography, and 21 children with recurrent tonsillitis were anesthetized using a standard protocol before adenotonsillectomy (ages 2-16 yr, ASA 1-3). The number of complications and medical interventions in the perioperative period were recorded and correlated with the presence and severity of OSAS.

Knowledge systems for sustainable development.

The challenge of meeting human development needs while protecting the earth's life support systems confronts scientists, technologists, policy makers, and communities from local to global levels. Many believe that science and technology (S&T) must play a more central role in sustainable development, yet little systematic scholarship exists on how to create institutions that effectively harness S&T for sustainability. This study suggests that efforts to mobilize S&T for sustainability are more likely to be effective when they manage boundaries between knowledge and action in ways that simultaneously enhance the salience, credibility, and legitimacy of the information they produce.

An Internet-ready database for prospective randomized clinical trials of high-dose-rate brachytherapy for adenocarcinoma of the prostate.

Purpose: To demonstrate a new interactive Internet-ready database for prospective clinical trials in high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

Methods And Materials: An Internet-ready database was created that allows common data acquisition and statistical analysis. Patient anonymity and confidentiality are preserved.
