Surgical evacuation of nontraumatic, supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) is uncommonly performed, and outcomes are generally poor. On the basis of published experimental data and the authors' anecdotal observations, a retrospective chart review study was performed to test the hypothesis that large decompressive craniectomies (DCs), compared with craniotomies, would improve clinical outcomes after surgical evacuation of SICH. AIDS is an increasingly common diagnosis seen by neurologists and neurosurgeons alike. Although the more common brain lesions associated with AIDS are due to central nervous system lymphomas, toxoplasma encephalitis or progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, relatively recent clinical evidence has shown that AIDS-independent cerebral tumours can arise as well, albeit less commonly. 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, or "Ecstasy" in tablet form) is a powerful sympathomimetic drug that is commonly perceived as safer than other stimulants such as methamphetamine or cocaine. "Molly" is a purified form of MDMA that is perceived by users as being even safer, as it is free of adulterants such as methamphetamine. Previously, all reports of intracranial hemorrhages in MDMA abusers were associated with coingestion of other sympathomimetic drugs, or with pre-existing cerebrovascular lesions.

Experimental data indicate that antagonists of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) could be used clinically in disorders characterized by excessive GHRH/growth hormone (GH) secretion, but direct evidence for the effectiveness of GHRH antagonists on human pituitary tissue is still lacking. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of our GHRH antagonists MZ-4-71 and JV-1-36 and the somatostatin (SST) analog RC-160 on superfused pituitary cells obtained from a human GH-secreting adenoma. Using Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry, we demonstrated profuse expression of the GHRH receptor and its major splice variant SV1 and an increase in the expression of Gsa protein in the adenoma tissue.

Object: The infratentorial supracerebellar approach to the pineal region presents special challenges during patient positioning. The head must be flexed and the body positioned to allow an operative trajectory under the straight sinus.
