Long-term results of forearm shortening and volar radiocarpal capsulotomy for wrist flexion deformity in children with amyoplasia.

Purpose: To perform a long-term review of results of forearm shortening osteotomies, tenotomy, and volar wrist capsulotomy for treatment of typical wrist flexion deformities in children with the amyoplasia form of arthrogryposis, a procedure originally reported and described as "most rewarding" by Lexington Shriners Hospital for Children in 1965.

Methods: A retrospective review of operating room and clinic records was done. An attempt to contact all patients produced 1 current follow-up.

Thumb hypoplasia.

Hypoplasia of the thumb refers to a spectrum of clinical abnormalities ranging from a slightly small digit to complete absence (or aplasia) of the thumb unit. As a component of radial dysplasia, thumb hypoplasia can be either an isolated entity or seen in conjunction with other elements of radial longitudinal deficiency. Treatment of this condition initially involves identifying and addressing co-morbid anomalies in other body systems.

A technique for using the Ilizarov fixator for primary centralization in radial clubhand.

Radial clubhand is a condition that is cosmetically unappealing and functionally challenging to the patient. Management of this condition aims to achieve a straighter alignment of the hand on the forearm while maintaining a stable wrist without compromise of growth at the distal ulnar epiphysis. We have been using a 2-stage procedure to manage type 3 and 4 radial clubhand since 1993.
