Diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) are aggressive and fatal pediatric tumors of the central nervous system that are highly resistant to treatments. Lysine to methionine substitution of residue 27 on histone H3 (H3-K27M) is a driver mutation in DMGs, reshaping the epigenetic landscape of these cells to promote tumorigenesis. H3-K27M gliomas are characterized by deregulation of histone acetylation and methylation pathways, as well as the oncogenic MYC pathway.

Documents specifying a national mathematics curriculum for grades K-12 have recently been written in Israel. We focus on the calculus component for the highest of three matriculation bound levels, and specifically on the influence of research on this component. In addition to issues of content, we identify three principles that have led the writing team, namely, the manner in which sample tasks in the curriculum document incorporate fundamental mathematical ideas and mathematical Reasoning, the Impact expected from connecting mathematics to its role in everyday life and science, and the Cultivation of fertile intellectual ground from which new concepts may emerge naturally.

The double-polarization observable E and helicity-dependent cross sections σ_{1/2}, σ_{3/2} have been measured for the photoproduction of π^{0} pairs off quasifree protons and neutrons at the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. A circularly polarized photon beam was produced by bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarized electrons and impinged on a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products were detected with an almost 4π covering calorimeter.

We report a measurement of the spin polarization of the recoiling neutron in deuterium photodisintegration, utilizing a new large acceptance polarimeter within the Crystal Ball at MAMI. The measured photon energy range of 300-700 MeV provides the first measurement of recoil neutron polarization at photon energies where the quark substructure of the deuteron plays a role, thereby providing important new constraints on photodisintegration mechanisms. A very high neutron polarization in a narrow structure centered around E_{γ}∼570  MeV is observed, which is inconsistent with current theoretical predictions employing nucleon resonance degrees of freedom.

Article Synopsis
  • Recurrent miscarriages are linked to high rates of thrombophilia, making tests like calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT) important for evaluation.
  • In a study of 25 pregnant women with unexplained recurrent miscarriages, 76% had live births and a similar percentage tested positive for thrombophilia, but thrombin generation did not vary significantly between miscarriages and successful pregnancies.
  • CAT parameters showed a trend towards hypercoagulability among those with thrombophilia, but results were not statistically significant, suggesting that CAT cannot reliably predict pregnancy outcomes in this group.

We present an experimental scheme that combines the well-established method of velocity-map imaging with a cold trapped metastable neon target. The device is used for obtaining the branching ratios and recoil-ion energy distributions for the penning ionization process in optical collisions of ultracold metastable neon. The potential depth of the highly excited dimer potential is extracted and compared with theoretical calculations.

Proximity-ligation methods such as Hi-C allow us to map physical DNA-DNA interactions along the genome, and reveal its organization into topologically associating domains (TADs). As the Hi-C data accumulate, computational methods were developed for identifying domain borders in multiple cell types and organisms. Here, we present PSYCHIC, a computational approach for analyzing Hi-C data and identifying promoter-enhancer interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • The double polarization observable E and helicity-dependent cross sections for η photoproduction from protons and neutrons were measured using a circularly polarized photon beam at the Mainz MAMI accelerator.
  • The experimental setup, including the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors, was effective in capturing decay photons and recoil nucleons from η decay processes.
  • The findings indicate that the narrow structure in η photoproduction from neutrons is linked to a spin-1/2 amplitude and suggests contributions from specific nucleon resonances, aligning well with recent reaction model predictions.

Purpose: Traditional maneuvers aim to decrease retroperitoneal bleeding in hemodynamically unstable multi-trauma patients with unstable pelvic fractures, are reportedly successful in approximately only 50%. The life-saving effect of extra-peritoneal pressure packing (EPPP) is based on direct compression and control of both venous and arterial retroperitoneal bleeders. This study describes the safety and efficacy of emergent EPPP employment, as a stand-alone surgical treatment, that is, carried out without external pelvic fixation or emergent angiography.

We report the first measurement of the target single-spin asymmetry, A(y), in quasielastic scattering from the inclusive reaction (3)He(↑)(e,e') on a (3)He gas target polarized normal to the lepton scattering plane. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero for one-photon exchange. A nonzero A(y) can arise from the interference between the one- and two-photon exchange processes which is sensitive to the details of the substructure of the nucleon.

We present a method of constructing an automatically reconfigurable, modular, electronic Zeeman slower, which is remotely controlled. This setup is used to investigate the ability of different magnetic field profiles to slow thermal atoms to the capture velocity of a magneto-optical-trap. We show that a simple numerical optimization process yields better results than the commonly used approach for deciding on the appropriate field and comes close to the optimum field, found by utilizing a fast feedback loop which uses a genetic algorithm.
