Nutcracker Syndrome Masquerading as Renal Colic in an Adolescent Athlete: A Case Report.

Introduction: Abdominal pain and flank pain cause a significant proportion of emergency department (ED) visits. The diagnosis often remains unclear and is frequently associated with repeat visits to the ED for the same complaint. A rare cause of left upper abdominal and flank pain is compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery known as nutcracker syndrome.

Inaccurate trauma history due to fear of health care personnel involving law enforcement in children of noncitizen immigrants.

Two cases illustrating intentional withholding of information by noncitizen parents of children with major trauma are described. The difficulties and the results of not obtaining an accurate history in the initial assessment of accidental trauma victims are discussed. The core problem in these cases seems to be a fear of health care providers and a false perception that emergency medical services and emergency department personnel are extensions of law enforcement.

Temperature and vascular volume effects on gastric ulcerogenesis after cord transection.

Gastric ulcers are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the critically ill, especially those with CNS injury. We used cervical spinal cord transection (CCT) in the rat to model these ulcers and examined the effect of core body temperature and vascular volume on gastric ulcerogenesis. Hypothermia significantly increased ulcerogenesis compared to euthermia, while maintained euthermia produced ulcer indices not different from sham surgery.
