Antioxidant supplementation decreases postexercise oxidative stress but could also decrease muscle protein synthesis. This study compared the effects of three diets: low antioxidant (control, CON), high antioxidant (AO), and branched-chain amino acid high antioxidant (BCAO) supplementation on postexercise protein synthesis and oxidative stress. We hypothesized that supplementing antioxidants with branched-chain amino acids(BCAA) would reduce oxidative stress without hindering muscle protein synthesis.

Background: Several outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) caused by influenza A virus of subtype H5N8 have been reported in wild birds and poultry in Europe during autumn 2020. Norway is one of the few countries in Europe that had not previously detected HPAI virus, despite widespread active monitoring of both domestic and wild birds since 2005.

Results: We report detection of HPAI virus subtype H5N8 in a wild pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), and several other geese, ducks and a gull, from south-western Norway in November and December 2020.

We present a method of modeling the basin of attraction as a three-dimensional function describing a two-dimensional manifold on which the dynamics of the system evolves from experimental time series data. Our method is based on the density of the data set and uses numerical optimization and data modeling tools. We also show how to obtain analytic curves that describe both the contours and the boundary of the basin.

We show how asymmetries in the movement patterns during the process of regaining balance after perturbation from quiet stance can be modeled by a set of coupled vector fields for the derivative with respect to time of the angles between the resultant ground reaction forces and the vertical in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions. In our model, which is an adaption of the model of Stirling and Zakynthinaki (2004), the critical curve, defining the set of maximum angles one can lean to and still correct to regain balance, can be rotated and skewed so as to model the effects of a repetitive training of a rotational movement pattern. For the purposes of our study a rotation and a skew matrix is applied to the critical curve of the model.

Purpose: We determined the effects of a 3-month low-moderate-intensity strength training program (2 sessions/week) on functional capacity, muscular strength, body composition, and quality of life (QOL) in 22 young (12-16 yrs) anorexic outpatients.

Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to a training or control group (n=11 [10 females] each). Training sessions were of low intensity (loads for large muscle groups ranging between 20%-30% and 50%-60% of six repetitions maximum [6RM] at the end of the program).

Background: The Health Enhancing Strength Training in Nonagenarians (STRONG) is a randomised control trial to assess the effectiveness of an aerobic and strength training program for improving muscle strength, functional capacity and quality of life in nonagenarians.

Methods: Sixty (51 women) nonagenarians (age range: 90-102 years) who live in a geriatric nursing home will be randomly assigned to either a usual care (control) group (n = 30) or an intervention (training) group (n = 30). Participants allocated in the usual care group will receive general physical activity guidelines and participants allocated in the intervention group will also enroll in three weekly non-consecutive individualized training sessions (approximately 45-50 min each) during 8 weeks.

The first stage in hemostasis is the binding of the platelet membrane receptor glycoprotein (GP) Ib-IX complex to the A1 domain of von Willebrand factor in the subendothelium. A bleeding disorder associated with this interaction is platelet-type von Willebrand disease, which results from gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in amino acid residues 233 or 239 of the GP Ibalpha subunit of GP Ib-IX. Using optical tweezers and a quadrant photodetector, we investigated the binding of A1 to GOF and loss-of-function mutants of GP Ibalpha with mutations in the region containing the two known naturally occurring mutations.

The interaction between the platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib-IX complex and von Willebrand factor (VWF) initiates both hemostasis and pathological thrombosis. This interaction is not only the first adhesive event of platelets at sites of vessel injury, but also facilitates fibrinogen binding to alpha(IIb)beta(3), which subsequently results in platelet aggregation. Since it has been suggested that GP Ib-IX clustering may promote platelet activation, we investigated the effect of such clustering on both VWF-GP Ib-IX and fibrinogen-alpha(IIb)beta(3) bonds using optical tweezers.

Ultralarge von Willebrand factor (ULVWF) multimers have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the catastrophic microangiopathic disorder, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Spontaneous ULVWF binding to platelets has been ascribed to increased avidity due to the greatly increased number of binding sites for platelets (the A1 domain) per molecule. Platelet glycoprotein Ib-IX-V (GPIb-IX-V) mediates adhesion to von Willebrand factor (vWF) in (patho)physiological thrombus formation. vWF binds the N-terminal 282 residues of GPIb alpha, consisting of an N-terminal flank (His1-Ile35), 7 leucine-rich repeats (Leu36-Ala200), a C-terminal flank (Phe201-Gly268), and a sulfated tyrosine sequence (Asp269-Glu282). By expressing canine-human chimeras of GPIb alpha on Chinese hamster ovary cells, binding sites for functional anti-GPIb alpha antibodies to individual domains were previously mapped, and it was shown that leucine-rich repeats 2 to 4 were required for optimal vWF recognition under static or flow conditions.

The interaction of von Willebrand factor (vWF) with the platelet receptor glycoprotein Ibalpha (GPIbalpha) is important for platelet adhesion at high shear stress. Two functionally important antigenic areas within GPIbalpha were identified through the characterization of 5 new inhibitory anti-GPIb monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The binding sites of 3 of these anti-GPIb mAbs, which were intercompeting and potently inhibiting shear stress-induced binding of vWF, were mapped within the N-terminal amino acid (aa) 1-59 area by the use of canine-human chimeras.

Glycoprotein I(b)alpha (GP I(b)alpha), the ligand binding subunit of the platelet glycoprotein Ib-IX-V complex, is sulfated on three tyrosine residues (Tyr-276, Tyr-278, and Tyr-279). This posttranslational modification is known to be critical for von Willebrand factor (vWF) binding; yet it remains unclear whether it provides a specific structure or merely contributes negative charges. Fat supplementation of diets for dairy cows produces changes in nutrient supply and milk composition. The effect of abomasal infusion of either cis-C18:1 or trans-C18:1 fatty acid isomers on the digestibility of fatty acids and milk composition was determined in lactating dairy cows. Platelet-type von Willebrand disease is a bleeding disorder resulting from gain-of-function mutations of glycoprotein (GP) Ibalpha that increase its affinity for von Willebrand factor (vWf). The two known naturally occurring mutations, G233V and M239V, both enrich the valine content of an already valine-rich region within the Cys(209)-Cys(248) disulfide loop. We have identified platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ibalpha as a counterreceptor for P-selectin. GP Ibalpha is a component of the GP Ib-IX-V complex, which mediates platelet adhesion to subendothelium at sites of injury. Cells expressing P-selectin adhered to immobilized GP Ibalpha, and GP Ibalpha-expressing cells adhered to and rolled on P-selectin and on histamine-stimulated endothelium in a P-selectin-dependent manner.
