We study the optical properties of metamaterials formed by layers of metallic nanoparticles. The effective optical constants of these materials are retrieved from the calculated angle-dependent Fresnel reflection coefficients for s and p incident-light polarization. We investigate the degree of anisotropy in the effective permittivity as a function of inter-layer spacing, particle size, filling fraction of the metal, and particle shape.

Robust beat detection under noisy conditions is required in order to obtain a correct clinical interpretation of the ECG in ambulatory settings. This paper describes the evaluation and optimization of a beat detection algorithm that is robust against high levels of noise. An evaluation protocol is defined in order to study four different characteristics of the algorithm: non-rhythmic patterns, different levels of SNR, exact peak detection and different levels of physical activity.

The antigen 85 (Ag85) complex of Mycobacterium tuberculosis represents a promising candidate as a novel drug target and pathogenesis factor. Ag85 comprises three proteins Ag85A, B and C, (encoded by the genes fbpA, B, and C), which participate in cell wall biosynthesis, and interact with the host macrophage as fibronectin-binding proteins (fbps). Ag85 is also involved in the response to isoniazid (INH) treatment.

A thorough characterization of the Ru-Hbpp (in,in-{[Ru(II)(trpy)(H(2)O)](2)(mu-bpp)}(3+) (trpy is 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, bpp is bis(2-pyridyl)-3,5-pyrazolate)) water oxidation catalyst has been carried out employing structural (single crystal X-ray), spectroscopic (UV-vis and NMR), kinetic, and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) analyses. The latter reveals the existence of five different oxidation states generated by sequential oxidation of an initial II,II state to an ultimate, formal IV,IV oxidation state. Each of these oxidation states has been characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, and their relative stabilities are reported.

A series of mononuclear and dinuclear chiral manganese(II) complexes containing the neutral bidentate chiral nitrogen ligand (-)-pinene[5,6]bipyridine, (-)-L, were prepared from different manganese salts. The chirality in these complexes arises from the pinene ring that has been fused to the 5,6 positions of one pyridine group of the bipyridine ligand. These complexes have been characterized through analytical, spectroscopic (IR, UV/Vis, ESI-MS) and electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry).

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is an age-associated condition and a common finding in Alzheimer's disease in which amyloid-beta (Abeta) vascular deposits are featured in >80% of the cases. Familial Abeta variants bearing substitutions at positions 21-23 are primarily associated with CAA, although they manifest with strikingly different clinical phenotypes: cerebral hemorrhage or dementia. The recently reported Piedmont L34V Abeta mutant, located outside the hot spot 21-23, shows a similar hemorrhagic phenotype, albeit less aggressive than the widely studied Dutch E22Q variant.

Gene expression of a class I chitinase (Vcchit1b) in the skin of table grapes was analyzed as a molecular marker for changes induced at low temperature and also to study the effect of high CO(2) levels modulating transcript levels at 0 degrees C. An active recombinant VcCHIT1b was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, and as the protein was produced as insoluble inclusion bodies, it was solubilized and refolded. Methamphetamine (METH), a potent stimulant with strong euphoric properties, has a high abuse liability and long-lasting neurotoxic effects. Recent studies in animal models have indicated that METH can induce impairment of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), thus suggesting that some of the neurotoxic effects resulting from METH abuse could be the outcome of barrier disruption. In this study, we provide evidence that METH alters BBB function through direct effects on endothelial cells and explore possible underlying mechanisms leading to endothelial injury.

The authors present a rare case of plasmacytoma of the orbit involving lacrimal gland with secondary transformation into multiple myeloma in a 42-year-old woman. The lesion was surgically removed and analyzed. Histopathological examination with immunostaining revealed it to be positive for immunoglobulin G and Kappa chains, demonstrating monoclonality.
