Sialic acid measurement by a modified Aminoff method: a time-saving reduction in 2-thiobarbituric acid concentration.

Our results show that if the 2-thiobarbituric acid concentration is decreased, its co-precipitation with the chromophore is diminished. Subsequent running of this reaction mixture by high-performance liquid chromatography still allows measurement of Neu-5-Ac in the picomole order, with a substantial time and reactive saving, as compared with the original assay.

Immunodiagnosis of human leptospirosis by dot-ELISA for the detection of IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies.

A dot-ELISA was evaluated using antigen obtained from Leptospira interrogans cultures of the serovars brasiliensis, canicola, cynopteri, hebdomadis, and icterohaemorrhagiae for the detection of human IgM, IgG, and IgA. Single serum samples from 63 patients with the icterohemorrhagic form of leptospirosis in the acute phase, collected 3-14 days (mean = 7 days) after the onset of symptoms were tested. Ten patients were examined during convalescence and followed up for a period of 4-12 months.

Complexity of the outward K+ current of the rat megakaryocyte.

Megakaryocytes isolated from rat bone marrow express a voltage-dependent, outward K+ current with complex kinetics of activation and inactivation. We found that this current could be separated into at least two components based on differential responses to K+ channel blockers. One component, which exhibited features of the "transient" or "A-type" K+ current of excitable cells, was more strongly blocked by 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) than by tetrabutylammonium (TBA).

Differences in Ca2+ pumping activity between sub-populations of human red cells.

It has been shown recently that the free Ca2+ content of human red cells rises during ageing in vivo. With the aim of determining the mechanisms involved in such a change, we have investigated some aspects of Ca2+ homeostasis. Both the initial rate of Ca2+ influx and some kinetic parameters of the Ca2+ pump of human red cells were studied in light and dense sub-populations obtained through stringent, self-formed Percoll gradients.

Ionic calcium content of light dense human red cells separated by Percoll density gradients.

In this paper we have compared the adequacy of two methods using Percoll density gradients to separate light and dense erythrocytes from fresh human blood. After measuring the distribution of some classical age-markers such as haemoglobin, potassium and creatine contents, it was found that preformed gradients generated more stringent conditions for age-related density separations. Employing such gradients the free Ca2+ content of above sub-populations was assessed with Fura-2, under conditions where the viscosity effect was abolished.

[Phyolaryngocele: a case report and review of literature].

A case of pyolaryngocele presented as a lateral cervical mass that produced acute dyspnea requiring tracheotomy. The diagnosis was by direct laryngoscopy, which revealed outflow of purulent material with pressure on the tumor, and was confirmed by CT. Broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment was given and the pyolaryngocele was excised by lateral extramucosal tyrotomy.

Evaluation of diagnostic tests for human leptospirosis.

The IgM-PK-ELISA, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for immunoglobulin M employing a proteinase K-treated antigen, and the "Leptoteste-S" macroagglutination test were evaluated for use in a rapid serodiagnosis of human leptospirosis. The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was used as reference. The three serological tests were applied to serum samples from patients with leptospirosis (N = 89), typhoid fever (N = 8), malaria (N = 19), syphilis (N = 20), hepatitis (N = 16) and from clinically healthy donors (N = 92).

Fungaemia in hospitalized patients.

At various clinics of IRCCS S. Matteo Hospital, Pavia, Italy, 269 blood cultures recovered from immunocompromised patients over 4 years have been examined mycologically. Of the 269 cultures, 101 were from HIV-infected patients and five were from cardiac transplant recipients.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases conferring resistance to monobactams and oxyimino-cephalosporins in clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens.

We studied antibiotic resistance patterns and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ES beta Ls) production in Serratia marcescens strains isolated in our hospital during 1993. We examined 210 S. marcescens isolates.

Patients And Methods: 791 consecutive patients candidate for surgical treatment, were studied prospectively under the next inclusion criteria: 40 years old or less than 40 years old. Blood count cell, glucose, urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, platelets count, liver function tests, chest x-ray and electrocardiograph made before entry.

Dopaminergic Influence on the Cardiovascular and Hormonal Responses to Cold Stress in Hypertensive Patients.

Immersion of one hand into ice water (cold pressor test) in eight hypertensive subjects induces elevation of mean arterial pressure, increase in heart rate, and no significant changes of plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone concentrations. Domperidone, a DA2 dopaminergic antagonist, attenuates heart rate increase induced by the cold pressor test, and the combination of bromocriptine, a known DA2 dopaminergic agonist, with domperidone again provoked a heart rate increase during the cold pressor test. Domperidone caused an increase of both plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone concentrations, which were reversed by bromocriptine.

The aim of this study is the development of an animal model useful for studying HIV-1 pathogenesis, candidate vaccines, and antiviral drugs. This case report describes the clinic and pathologic findings of an inflammatory pseudotumor of the mesentery in a 43 years old male. Previous to the hospital admission he had several episodes of intestinal occlusion and an abdominal mass. Computed tomography and mesenteric angiography were very helpful.

Outbreak of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Serratia marcescens in an intensive care unit.

Serratia marcescens has recently been identified as an important etiological agent in nosocomial infections, and is considered to be an opportunistic pathogen agent in immunosuppressed patients undergoing long periods of intensive care. Research carried out in 1991 and 1992 showed that it was of epidemiological relevance in only 1-2% of clinical isolates at the Ospedale di Circolo, Varese, Italy. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases from Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated at an Italian hospital.

Eighteen strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae recently isolated from hospitalized patients were resistant or moderately resistant to oxyimino-cephalosporins (ceftazidime and/or cefotaxime), aztreonam, cefoxitin and all but one were susceptible to imipenem. Analysis of enzymes produced by these clinical isolates revealed a wide pattern of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. All isolates produced one or more beta-lactamases that were characterized preliminarily by their isoelectric point.

A short-term longitudinal study of impulsivity and antisocial behavior.

This study analyzes the relationships between impulsivity and antisocial behavior in a noninstitutionalized sample, taking into account the multidimensional nature of impulsivity and the diversity of types of antisocial behavior. Data were obtained in 1989 and 1990 from 1,226 adolescents aged 12-18 years (583 boys and 643 girls) as part of a longitudinal study of risk factors for drug abuse and delinquency. The patterns of stability or change of the various dimensions of antisocial behavior (rule breaking, vandalism, theft, aggression, and drug taking) in relation to impulsivity were investigated.

Dopamine-induced antihypertensive effects and plasma insulin rise are blocked by metoclopramide in labetalol-treated patients.

Eleven patients with moderate to severe hypertension were studied at the Vargas Hospital of Caracas. The patients were pretreated with labetalol, 800 to 1200 mg/day, orally, over a period of 1 week, after which an intravenous infusion of dopamine, .5 to 3 micrograms/kg/minute, was given.

Comparison among various methods of assessment of impulsiveness.

The current confused status of the research on impulsivity may be attributed to the lack of precise definitions, the reliance of most operationalizations on a single index, and inconsistency among different measures of the construct. Empirical measurements of impulsivity by self-reports, rating scales, or performance tasks suggest that the instruments employed measure aspects that have very little in common, a finding that throws serious doubts on the validity of the construct and implies a need for further research. To clarify this topic, we applied four different measures of impulsivity to 46 7th-grade (12 to 13 years old) schoolchildren.

[Evaluation of anesthetic techniques in ambulatory surgery].

Many of the surgical procedures performed in the hospital can be done on an out-patient basis, provided an appropriate anesthetic technique is applied to allow the patient to return home comfortably and safely. Choice of anesthetic technique must always be made in keeping with patient characteristics and type of surgery. Treatment of anxiety in a preoperative interview or by giving tranquilizers will be beneficial to all patients, as will reduction of gastric secretion by administration of H2 receptor blockers.
