Background: Estrogens exert a role on germ cell physiology of normal human testis through the mediation of the estrogen receptor (ER) beta subtypes. Epidemiological studies evidenced an increased incidence of testicular germ cell cancer after elevated pre-natal estrogen exposure but the expression of estrogen receptors in these testicular neoplasms has not been well elucidated.

Methods: Immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis were used to investigate the expression of three distinct ER isoforms, ERalpha, ERbeta1, and ERbeta2 in paraffin-embedded tissues from seminomas and embryonal carcinomas, which are the most common testicular germ cell tumours.

This 18-week, randomized, flexible-dose, double-blind, double-dummy trial evaluated ziprasidone as an alternative to clozapine in treatment-refractory schizophrenia patients. Patients had a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia, a history of resistance and/or intolerance to at least three acute cycles with different antipsychotics given at therapeutic doses, PANSS score >or=80, and CGI-S score >or=4. The exponential growth of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has in large part been due to expansion of the indications to include the procedure in patients with extensive coronary disease, multiple risk factors, older age and comorbidities. Improvement in PCI equipment, development of new interventional techniques, and availability of myocardial and systemic support techniques have all contributed to this growth. With these advances, patients once considered high risk for PCI are no longer considered high risk.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the gene expression pattern produced by the cancer-associated BRCA1 5083del19 founder mutation by using a microarray analysis. Such a mutation, identified in a subset of familial breast cancer patients, involves a deletion at the 3' end of the BRCA1 messenger leading, in the mature protein, to the ablation of the BRCT tandem domain.

Background: Despite the availability of several potent antithrombotic agents, the optimal antiplatelet regimen in elective patients undergoing complex percutaneous coronary interventions is still debated. Aim of the INtegrilin plus STenting to Avoid myocardial Necrosis Trial will be to assess the safety and efficacy of routine usage of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor eptifibatide in patients already treated with aspirin and clopidogrel and undergoing implantation of at least two drug-eluting stents in the same lesion, thus identifying a clinically stable but anatomically complex patient subset.
