We studied the effects of low-energy electron beam irradiation up to 10 keV on graphene-based field effect transistors. We fabricated metallic bilayer electrodes to contact mono- and bi-layer graphene flakes on SiO₂, obtaining specific contact resistivity ρ c ≈ 19 k Ω · µ m 2 and carrier mobility as high as 4000 cm²·V·s. By using a highly doped p-Si/SiO₂ substrate as the back gate, we analyzed the transport properties of the device and the dependence on the pressure and on the electron bombardment.

Estrogens are involved in growth, differentiation and pathogenesis of human prostate through the mediation of the classical estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ. The G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) is a 'novel' mediator of estrogen signaling which has been recently recognized in some human reproductive tissues, but its expression in the prostate gland is still unknown. Here, we investigated GPER in benign (from 5 patients) and neoplastic prostatic tissues (from 50 patients) by immunohistochemical analysis and Western blotting.

Background: Percutaneous valve-in-valve therapy has become an important treatment option for failing bioprosthetic heart valves. Accurate assessment of valve internal diameter (ID) is essential for effective and safe treatment. These data may not be available in an individual patient, or the manufacturer-supplied dimensions may be incorrect because they do not allow for the space occupied by valve leaflet material.

Transcatheter MitraClip repair is a new tool for the management of severe mitral regurgitation in patients at very high risk for conventional surgery. Aim of our study was reporting one-year clinical outcomes in candidates to MitraClip procedures, divided into three groups according to the cardiovascular medicine heart failure (CVM-HF) index. The study population consists of 46 consecutive patients, divided, in accordance with CVM-HF index, as follows: one patient in the low-risk category (group A); 27 patients in the medium-risk (group B) and 18 patients in high-risk category (group C).

Purpose: By catalyzing cGMP hydrolysis, phosphodiesterase (PDE) 5 is a critical regulator of its concentration and effects in different (patho)physiologic processes, including cancers. As PDE5 is a known druggable target, we investigated the clinical significance of its expression in breast cancer and the underlying mechanisms by which it may contribute to tumor progression.

Experimental Design: PDE5 expression was evaluated in seven breast cancer cell lines by RT-PCR and immunoblotting.

Article Synopsis
  • The study measures the normalized differential cross section for top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC, using data from the CMS detector with an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb⁻¹.
  • The analysis focuses on different decay channels, including lepton+jets and dilepton, examining various kinematic properties of charged leptons and associated jets.
  • The results are compared to theoretical predictions from quantum chromodynamics, showing no significant deviations from the standard model expectations.

We develop a theoretical model to describe the transport properties of normal-metal/thin-ferromagnet/superconductor device. We perform experimental test of the model using a gold tip on PdNi/Nb bilayer. The resonant proximity effect causes conductance features very sensitive to the local ferromagnetic properties, enabling accurate measurement of polarization and thickness of the ferromagnet by point contact spectroscopy.

Trans-catheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) is actually the most attractive technique for treating patients with severe mitral regurgitation, who are denied surgical therapy. Recently, trans-catheter implantation of aortic biological prosthesis in mitral position has been done in compassionate cases, and very few experiences of TMVI in native non-calcified valves have been recently reported in very-high-risk patients, mainly with functional mitral regurgitation. Here, we report our case of TMVI using the second-generation CardiAQ prostheisis (CardiAQ Valve Technologies, Irvine, California, USA), reviewing the current state of the art.

Background: Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a primary electrical disease associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death due to ventricular fibrillation. This pathology has nuclear heterogeneous genetic origins, and at present, molecular diagnostic tests on nuclear DNA cover only 30% of BrS patients. The aim of this study was to assess the possible involvement of mitochondrial (mt) DNA variants in BrS since their etiological role in several cardiomyopathies has already been described.

We fabricate back-gated field effect transistors using niobium electrodes on mechanically exfoliated monolayer graphene and perform electrical characterization in the pressure range from atmospheric down to 10(-4) mbar. We study the effect of room temperature vacuum degassing and report asymmetric transfer characteristics with a resistance plateau in the n-branch. We show that weakly chemisorbed Nb acts as p-dopant on graphene and explain the transistor characteristics by Nb/graphene interaction with unpinned Fermi level at the interface.

Recent evidence would indicate that high serum uric acid (SUA) levels can be a significant and independent risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and heart failure. In the last few years an independent risk relationship between hyperuricemia, cardiovascular disease and mortality has also been reported. Hyperuricemia has been shown as an independent risk factor for acute myocardial infarction and an independent and conjoint association of either gout and SUA with total and cardiovascular mortality has been reported, with mortality impact in gout patients increasing with rising SUA concentrations, even for SUA levels in the normal to high range.
