This study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical performance of two truncated cone implant designs in maxillary sinus lift (MSL) procedures using polyurethane laminas. A total of 128 implants were used. Polyurethane laminas were divided into two groups based on thickness (1 and 3 mm) and two subgroups based on density (20 and 30 pounds per cubic foot, PCF).

Background/objectives: Perillyl alcohol (POH), a plant-derived compound, has demonstrated anti-tumor activity across various human cancers. Understanding the regulatory pathways through which POH exerts its effects is crucial for identifying new therapeutic opportunities and exploring potential drug repositioning strategies. Therefore, this scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the metabolic and regulatory pathways involved in the anticancer effects of POH, based on in vitro evidence.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop an innovative 3D in vitro model based on the biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) scaffold combined with human osteoblasts (hOBs), osteoclasts (hOCs), and endothelial cells to evaluate its effects on bone and vascular cells behavior.

Methods: To this end, an optimized mixture of hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) with a weight ratio of 30/70 was employed to develop a BCP scaffold using the computer-aided design (CAD) approach. The BCP scaffold was combined with primary cultures of hOBs, hOCs and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

This study aimed to evaluate various biomechanical parameters associated with the primary stability of Maestro and Due Cone implants placed in low-density artificial bones, prepared using high-speed drilling with irrigation and low-speed drilling without irrigation. The insertion torque (IT), removal torque (RT), and implant stability quotient (ISQ) values were recorded for Maestro and Due Cone implants placed in low-density polyurethane blocks (10 and 20 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) with and without a cortical layer) prepared using high-speed and low-speed with or without irrigation using a saline solution, respectively. A three-way ANOVA model and Tukey's post-hoc test were conducted, presenting data as means and standard deviations.

Pyrogens are fever-inducing substances routinely investigated in health products through tests such as the Rabbit Pyrogen Test (RPT), the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), and the Monocyte Activation Test (MAT). However, the applications of the MAT for medical devices and biomaterials remain limited. This work aimed to overview the studies evaluating the pyrogenicity of medical devices and biomaterials using the MAT, highlighting its successes and potential challenges.

The purpose of this finite element analysis (FEA) was to evaluate the stress distribution within the prosthetic components and bone in relation to varying cement thicknesses (from 20 to 60 μm) utilized to attach a zirconia crown on a conometric cap. The study focused on two types of implants (Cyroth and TAC, AoN Implants, Grisignano di Zocco, Italy) featuring a Morse cone connection. Detailed three-dimensional (3D) models were developed to represent the bone structure (cortical and trabecular) and the prosthetic components, including the crown, cement, cap, abutment, and the implant.

  • * Researchers looked at many studies from 2022 to 2024 and found 36 useful articles about how adding zinc to HA helps bone cells become stronger.
  • * Although ZnHA is safe and makes bone cells grow well, figuring out the best amount of zinc to use is still unclear and needs more research.

The issue of dental implant placement relative to the alveolar crest, whether in supracrestal, equicrestal, or subcrestal positions, remains highly controversial, leading to conflicting data in various studies. Three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) can offer insights into the biomechanical aspects of dental implants and the surrounding bone. A 3D model of the jaw was generated using computed tomography (CT) scans, considering a cortical thickness of 1.

The design of the implant prosthesis-abutment complex appears crucial for shaping healthy and stable peri-implant soft tissues. The aim of the present animal study was to compare two implants with different healing abutment geometries: a concave design (TEST) and a straight one (CTRL). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to quantify the three-dimensional topography and morphological properties of collagen at nanoscale resolution.

Extreme atrophy of the maxilla still poses challenges for clinicians. Some of the techniques used to address this issue can be complex, risky, expensive, and time consuming, often requiring skilled surgeons. While many commonly used techniques have achieved very high success rates, complications may arise in certain cases.

Combining tooth extraction and implant placement reduces the number of surgical procedures that a patient must undergo. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the stability of two types of conical implants (TAC and INTRALOCK) and another cylindrical one (CYROTH), inserted with a range of angulation of 15-20 degrees in low-density polyurethane blocks (10 and 20 pounds per cubic foot, PCF) with or without a cortical lamina (30 PCF), which potentially mimicked the post-extraction in vivo condition. For this purpose, a total of 120 polyurethane sites were prepared (10 for each implant and condition) and the Insertion Torque (IT), Removal Torque (RT), and Resonance Frequency Analysis (RFA) were measured, following a Three-Way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post hoc test for the statistical analysis of data.

Essential oils (EOs) are mixtures of volatile compounds belonging to several chemical classes derived from aromatic plants using different distillation techniques. Recent studies suggest that the consumption of Mediterranean plants, such as anise and laurel, contributes to improving the lipid and glycemic profile of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory effect of anise and laurel EOs (AEO and LEO) on endothelial cells isolated from the umbilical cord vein of females with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM-HUVEC), which is a suitable in vitro model to reproduce the pro-inflammatory phenotype of a diabetic endothelium.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the feasibility of a one-stage maxillary sinus augmentation using a new self-condensing implant design in patients with low bone height (around 2 mm), typically requiring a two-stage surgical approach.
  • Analyzed data from 54 patients indicated an impressive implant survival rate of 98.55% after 3 years, with minimal bone loss and positive changes in bone graft volume measured using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.
  • The findings support the effectiveness of this innovative implant design for single-stage surgeries, highlighting its benefits for patients with limited bone height.

Short implants were introduced to reduce morbidity, treatment duration, and complex bone regeneration interventions in atrophic jaws and to improve patient-reported outcomes. This study aimed to determine the insertion torque (IT), removal torque (RT), and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values of ultrashort (3 mm length), short (7 mm length), and standard implants (10 mm length) inserted in 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-mm thickness polyurethane sheets with densities of 10, 20, and 30 pounds per cubic foot (PCF). Standard-length implants were the gold standard (control).

Red wine is a relevant source of bioactive compounds, which contribute to its antioxidant activity and other beneficial advantages for human health. However, the bioavailability of phenols in humans is not well understood, and the inter-individual variability in the production of phenolic compounds has not been comprehensively assessed to date. The present work describes a new method for the extraction and analysis of phenolic compounds including gallic acid (Gal), vanillic acid (Van), caffeic acid (Caf), syringic acid (Sir); (-)-epicatechin (Epi); p-coumaric acid (Cum) and resveratrol (Rsv) in human saliva samples.
