Article Synopsis
  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can develop unpredictably, as seen with avoparcin usage in farming that led to vancomycin resistance, highlighting past mistakes in antibiotic use.
  • In the EU, there is increasing use of the antibiotic monensin (MON) in livestock, though studies suggest it may not lead to cross-resistance with human antibiotics, some research indicates otherwise.
  • It's crucial to assess if the economic gains from MON's use outweigh environmental impacts and the risk of promoting AMR, emphasizing the need for good animal husbandry practices over reliance on antibiotics.

We describe a new method to detect trace levels of ptaquiloside (Pta), a major carcinogen of bracken fern in biological samples such as milk from farm animals. The method involves the absorption of analyte on carbograph followed by elution with solvents mixtures. The unstable analyte is then converted into Br-Pt (II), which is specific for Pta, as it is not a natural decay product of the glycoside in aqueous media.

The 3' untranslated region of the water buffalo Nramp1 (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1) gene contains two alleles (Nramp1A and Nramp1B), as detected by the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) technique. The Nramp1BB genotype is associated with resistance of water buffalo to the intracellular pathogen Brucella abortus. This article provides evidence that the Nramp1AA genotype is associated with susceptibility to the same pathogen.
