Brain dynamics is highly non-stationary, permanently subject to ever-changing external conditions and continuously monitoring and adjusting internal control mechanisms. Finding stationary structures in this system, as has been done recently, is therefore of great importance for understanding fundamental dynamic trade relationships. Here we analyse electroencephalographic recordings (EEG) of 13 subjects with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) during rest and while being influenced by different acoustic stimuli.

Introduction: Among the elderly, the availability of tool assessing psychosomatic syndromes is limited. The present study aims at testing inter-rater reliability and concurrent validity of the semi-structured interview for the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (DCPR-R-SSI) in the elderly of the general population.

Method: One hundred eight subjects were recruited.

Background/objective: To examine rates of counseling on driving for individuals with osteoarthritis (OA) and/or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and evaluate the Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI) as a screening tool for further driving evaluation.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was completed by individuals recruited via ResearchMatch (a national web-based recruitment tool) between March 5 and April 20, 2020. Individuals with a current US driver's license, ≥18 years old, with self-reported OA and/or RA diagnosis were surveyed about driving difficulty and vehicle modification and completed a HAQ-DI assessment.

Article Synopsis
  • Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) are uncommon and can be difficult to identify and manage due to their complex symptoms and the need for early diagnosis.* -
  • A case study is presented involving a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who experienced neurological issues, specifically progressive global ataxia and sensory changes, that persist even after kidney removal.* -
  • Although the patient's symptoms did not fully resolve, starting cancer-directed therapies helped stabilize his neurological decline.*

Introduction: Stroke is a complex event on both behavioral and neuronal grounds. Recent investigations evidence the central role of subcortical damage on the post-stroke brain and behavior reorganization. We have conducted an exploratory study combining anatomical lesion analysis, functional analysis of resting state fMRI, and behavioral assessment with focus on exploration as represented by SEEKING.

Objective: Unilateral neglect is usually investigated by adminstering stimuli (targets) in different positions, with targets being responded to by the patient (Hit) or omitted. In spite of this homogeneity of data type, neglect indices and diagnostic criteria vary considerably, causing inconsistencies in both clinical and experimental settings. We aimed at deriving a standard analysis which would apply to all tasks sharing this data form.

Background: The life expectancy of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) is ever-increasing, but little is known about their clinical course over late stages. Several issues (premorbid conditions, complications and pressure sores) are to be considered for their effect on clinical outcome, risk of death and recovery of functional performance. Unfortunately, in late stages of long-term rehabilitation, these aspects are still more neglected than in acute and postacute stages.

Objective: Previous studies on caregivers of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) have highlighted that their overall burden is not related to disease duration or diagnosis, but mainly to their personal characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of attachment style and hopelessness on overall burden in caregivers of patients in both vegetative state and minimally conscious state.

Methods And Procedure: Nineteen caregivers of patients with DOCs, hosted in a long-term care facility, were assessed using the Caregiver Burden Inventory, the Attachment Style Questionnaire, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale.

Objective: To examine the long-term effects of the Integrated Nutrition and Physical Activity Program (INPAP), a school-based nutrition education program.

Design: Quasi-experimental design comparing intervention and comparison cohorts at 3-6 years after delivery of the INPAP intervention on nutrition- and physical activity-related outcomes.

Setting: This study was conducted in 1 school district in a low-income rural county of ∼15,000 residents in south-central Colorado.

Objective: Determine validity of Day in the Life Questionnaire-Colorado (DILQ-CO) as a dietary assessment tool for classroom-administered use.

Methods: Agreement between DILQ-CO responses and weighed plate waste measured in 125 fourth-grade students in 2 low-income schools. Validity assessed by comparing reported school lunch items and portion size estimations on DILQ-CO to plate waste.

To increase opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity, US school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program were required to create a Local Wellness Policy (LWP) by June 2006. The What's Working project described the initial influence of this mandate on nutrition environments and policies. In 2005 and 2007 (before and after the mandate went into effect), a survey about school features related to nutrition and physical activity was sent to a random sample of 45 low-income, rural elementary foodservice managers and principals.

This study adapted an urban-based school nutrition program for delivery in a rural community. Specific aims were to adapt the curriculum; expand it to include physical activity; determine effectiveness on students' attitudes, knowledge, and self-efficacy; and assess teachers' impressions. Three cohorts were established: 173 students taught by a resource teacher, 170 students taught by classroom teachers, and 187 students who did not receive the curriculum.

This study modified a successful nutrition program to improve its transferability and potential for institutionalization. Specific aims were to determine: 1) if 16 nutrition lessons taught alternately by special resource teachers (SRT) and classroom teachers, could produce outcomes equivalent to 24 SRT lessons; and 2) teachers' reactions to the program. The quasi-experimental design used classrooms (19 treatment and 19 comparison) in matched schools.

We evaluated the acute therapeutic effects of the oral administration of nifedipine (10 mg) and diltiazem (120 mg) alone and in combination in 16 patients with effort angina. The 16 patients (13 men and three women; mean age 59 +/- 7 years) performed a symptom-limited bicycle exercise stress test 3 h after placebo or active substance administration. Maximal work load, exercise duration and time to 1 mm ST segment depression were significantly increased and ST depression at peak exercise was significantly decreased by the combination of drugs.
