Article Synopsis
  • - Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory skin condition linked to T-lymphocyte activation, and treating it in individuals with HIV is challenging due to immune system complications.
  • - This study reviewed 19 articles involving 24 cases of psoriasis in people with HIV, analyzing various therapies like apremilast and ustekinumab, which showed effectiveness in reducing skin symptoms and even some cases of psoriatic arthritis.
  • - Although adverse events were rare and manageable, more comprehensive research is needed to clearly understand the safety and efficacy of these treatments for HIV-positive patients.

Article Synopsis
  • * The article details two case studies where SRS was successfully used on patients who were not suitable for invasive surgery, resulting in significant improvements in their seizure frequency and severity.
  • * Although SRS has some advantages over traditional surgery, it's generally less effective than ATL, and patients should be informed about potential risks and monitored for complications like delayed cerebral edema.

Article Synopsis
  • Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a non-cancerous tumor that mainly affects middle-aged women and appears as a small, smooth, skin-colored nodule typically under 1 cm in size.
  • Though it usually occurs in the anogenital region, rare cases have been reported in other areas with modified apocrine glands, such as the head and neck.
  • This text presents a second case of an ectopic HP found in the external ear canal, specifically in the conchal bowl, adding to the very limited documentation in medical literature.

Background: Alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (AGP) may support a clinical diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). In this study, we assessed the analytical and diagnostic performances of a novel ELISA method to measure feline AGP.

Methods: AGP was measured in sera and effusions from cats with FIP (n = 20) or with other diseases (n = 15).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of Caveolin-1 (Cav1), Caveolin-2 (Cav2), and Cavin-1 in psoriasis vulgaris and its subtypes by analyzing skin biopsy samples.
  • Researchers found that Cav1 is generally downregulated across all types of psoriasis, with nail, plaque, and palmoplantar psoriasis showing the most significant reductions.
  • The findings suggest that Cav1 may serve as a universal biomarker for psoriasis, while Cav2 and Cavin-1 show specific downregulation mainly in nail and pustular psoriasis, indicating potential targets for treatment.

Summary: Psoriasis is often associated with abdominal obesity and type-2 diabetes (T2D). The inflammatory process in psoriasis can target adipose tissue depots, especially those surrounding the heart and coronary arteries, exposing to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. A 50-year-old female patient referred to us for abdominal obesity and T2D, which were not controlled with lifestyle modifications.

Objective: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a well-established treatment for vestibular schwannomas (VS). Hearing loss remains a main morbidity of VS and its treatments, including SRS. The effects of radiation parameters of SRS on hearing remain unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Long-term complications from Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are common and can significantly impact patients' lives, but there is no clear agreement on how to manage these complications.
  • An international DELPHI study was conducted with healthcare professionals to develop a standardized approach to managing SJS/TEN sequelae through a survey assessing various treatment aspects.
  • The study successfully reached a consensus on all proposed management statements, suggesting guidelines for multidisciplinary follow-up that can assist physicians in caring for affected patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a type of hair loss caused by immune system dysfunction, and current treatments often fail with no known cure.
  • This study aimed to find a new treatment target by investigating the expression of IL-17 in scalp biopsies from LPP patients, discovering that IL-17 levels were significantly higher compared to controls.
  • The findings suggest that targeting the IL-17 pathway could potentially reduce inflammation and fibrosis in LPP, offering a new approach to managing this condition.

Introduction: Scalp micropigmentation is a method of concealing alopecia by depositing permanent pigment in a tattoo-like manner. Pigment is deposited between hair follicles in a stippling pattern that resembles closely cut hair.

Case Presentation: On trichoscopy, characteristic findings of scalp micropigmentation include homogenous, grey to black circular dots that are evenly spaced and appear larger than adjacent hair follicles.

Introduction: Hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) are developmental malformations that are associated with mild to severe drug-refractory epilepsy. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an emerging non-invasive option for the treatment of small and medium-sized HH, providing good seizure outcomes without neurological complications. Here, we report our experience treating HH with frameless LINAC SRS.

Background: We tested the hypothesis that the ratio between lactate dehydrogenase activity (LDH) and total nucleated cell counts (TNCC) in effusions may be useful to diagnose feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).

Methods: LDH/TNCC ratio was retrospectively evaluated in 648 effusions grouped based on cytology and physicochemical analysis (step 1), on the probability of FIP estimated by additional tests on fluids (step 2) or on other biological samples (step 3, = 471). Results of different steps were statistically compared.

A 5-y-old spayed female Golden Retriever dog was referred because of severe normocytic normochromic nonregenerative anemia and thrombocytopenia. Serum analysis revealed hyperproteinemia and monoclonal or oligoclonal gammopathy. Fine-needle aspiration of the spleen revealed a highly erythrophagocytic population of neoplastic round cells, morphologically suggestive of plasma cells.

Bubble hair deformity is an acquired abnormality characterized by air-filled cavity formations within the hair shaft, usually because of heat damage. Traditionally, bubble hair is diagnosed by visualization of characteristic bubbles under light microscopy. The increased utilization of trichoscopy (scalp dermoscopy) has led to its adoption in the diagnosis of many hair and scalp conditions, including bubble hair deformity.

Conventional radiotherapy is a widely used non-invasive form of treatment for many types of cancer. However, due to a low threshold in the lung for radiation-induced normal tissue damage, it is of less utility in treating lung cancer. For this reason, surgery is the preferred treatment for lung cancer, which has the detriment of being highly invasive.

In countries other than the United States, the BCG vaccine is typically used as a method for preventing childhood tuberculosis; in the United States, the BCG vaccine has gained popularity as a speculated therapy for autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Research suggests that the vaccine can train the innate immune response, thereby improving symptoms of disorders such as diabetes and fibromyalgia. However, the potential side effects associated with the use of this vaccine are not totally innocuous.

Local inflammation plays a pivotal role in the process of secondary damage after spinal cord injury. We recently reported that acute intravenous application of extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by human umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells dampens the induction of inflammatory processes following traumatic spinal cord injury. However, systemic application of EVs is associated with delayed delivery to the site of injury and the necessity for high doses to reach therapeutic levels locally.

Introduction: Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, potentially life-threatening, neutrophilic, autoinflammatory skin disease characterised by recurrent flares of generalised sterile pustules and associated systemic features. Inconsistent diagnostic criteria and a lack of approved therapies pose serious challenges to GPP management. Our objectives were to discuss the challenges encountered in the care of patients with GPP and identify healthcare provider (HCP) educational needs and clinical practice gaps in GPP management.
