Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers included 103 SLE patients and 95 control subjects, measuring IMT and screening for plaques in multiple arteries while correlating findings with various factors like age, gender, and SLE duration.
  • * Results indicate strong associations between atherosclerosis and traditional cardiovascular risk factors, suggesting that continuous immunosuppressive treatment may improve IMT and reduce atherosclerosis risk in SLE patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, with a meta-analysis indicating higher intima media thickness (IMT) in RA patients, hinting at atherosclerosis progression.
  • The study analyzed 317 RA patients and 111 controls to determine how various RA treatments affect IMT and atherosclerotic plaques.
  • Results showed that higher doses of methotrexate (≥ 20 mg/wk), cyclosporine, or biologics lead to lower IMT and plaques compared to lower doses of MTX or other drugs, with no significant differences between the treatments.

Objective: The investigation is aimed at the development of a semiautomatic method of examining the femoral and iliac arteries, and quantifying atherosclerotic plaques visible in the multislice computed tomography images.

Methods: We have utilized the advanced morphology and segmentation methods for processing of a series of the images. In particular, a novel sorted pixel intensity approach to segment the artery into the lumen/plaque regions has been used, and effectively combined with the Gaussian mixture modeling to increase the accuracy of the segmentation.

Background And Purpose: Growing number of vertebral artery dissection has been detected due to higher awareness and improved imaging techniques, even after seemingly minor head turning in young- or middle-aged adults without predisposing risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. Treatment options for this condition at this time are limited and there is a troubling shortage of controlled studies.

Summary Of Case: Our patient suffered a bilateral vertebral artery dissection complicated by posterior circulation stroke.

Purpose: A false aneurysm is rare and underdiagnosed complication of intracranial hemorrhage. Objective of the study was to point out diagnostic imaging signs of false aneurysm and to determine frequency and diagnostic significance of these signs.

Materials And Methods: Cerebral arteriography performed in our center from November 2007 to September 2010 revealed the false aneurysm in 8 patients (4 male, 4 female, mean age was 38 years).

A 45-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal pain, fever, and weight loss. Laboratory tests performed on admission revealed raised inflammatory markers. Ultrasonography of the abdomen showed dilatation of the pyelocalyceal system of the left kidney, while computed tomography showed retroperitoneal concentric periaortic mass extending to common iliac arteries and entrapping the left ureter.

Aim: The aim of the study was retrospective review of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) findings in group of patient with suspected congenital inner ear malformation and comparison of CT reports with the data concerning qualification for cochlear implantation, electrode choice and surgical technique modification.

Material And Method: 40 subjects, aged from 18 months to 32 years, with suspected inner ear malformation, underwent MDCT in protocol for temporal bone assessment as a part of preoperative assessment before cochlear implantation. CT results were compared with the data concerning qualification for implantation, electrode choice, ear choice and possible technique modification.
