The lung is dynamically remodeled in response to injury, which alters extracellular matrix composition, and can lead to either healthy or impaired lung regeneration. To determine how changes in extracellular matrix can influence alveolar epithelial barrier function, we examined the expression and function of tight junction proteins by rat alveolar epithelial type II cells cultured on one of three different matrix components: type I collagen or fibronectin, matrix glycoproteins which are highly expressed in injured lungs, or laminin, a basement membrane matrix component. Of note, alveolar epithelial cells cultured for 2 days on fibronectin formed high-resistance barriers and showed continuous claudin-3 and claudin-18 localization to the plasma membrane, as opposed to cells cultured on either type I collagen or laminin, which had low resistance monolayers and had areas of cell-cell contact that were claudin deficient.

Despite recent advances in understanding the molecular biology of lung carcinoma and the introduction of multiple new chemotherapeutic agents for its treatment, its dismal five-year survival rate (<15%) has not changed substantially. The redox potential (E(h)) of Cys/CySS is centered at approximately -80 mV in the plasma of healthy adults, and oxidation of E(h) Cys/CySS is implicated in inflammation associated with various diseases.
Methodology/principal Findings: The purpose of the present study was to determine whether oxidized E(h) Cys/CySS is a determinant of interleukin (IL)-1beta levels.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the inmunomodulatory effects of UR-1505, a new salicylate derivative, on the T helper (Th)2/humoral response produced during dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced rat colitis. In the in vitro studies, UR-1505 (300 microM) inhibited both the production of interleukin (IL)-10 and IL-5 in concanavalin A (Con A)-activated splenocytes and the production of immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgA by B-lymphocytes. However, in contrast to the in vitro results, the administration of UR-1505 (10 and 30 mg/kg per day) to rats with established DSS-colitis enhanced both IL-10 and IgA production, whereas it inhibited IgG production, thus ameliorating the intestinal inflammation.

Here, we show that dietary compounds, such as fish oil (which contains certain kinds of fatty acids like omega3 and omega6 polyunsaturated fatty acids), also inhibit NSCLC cell growth by affecting PPARgamma and by inhibiting the expression of integrin-linked kinase (ILK). Several lines of evidence indicate that depletion of glutathione (GSH), a critical thiol antioxidant, is associated with the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, GSH synthesis depends on the amino acid cysteine (Cys), and relatively little is known about the regulation of Cys in fibrosis. Cys and its disulfide, cystine (CySS), constitute the most abundant low-molecular weight thiol/disulfide redox couple in the plasma, and the Cys/CySS redox state (E(h) Cys/CySS) is oxidized in association with age and smoking, known risk factors for IPF.
