Introduction: Mitral valve stenosis (MS) can be concomitantly present in patients undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). Some studies have reported up to one-fifth of patients who underwent TAVI also have MS. The relationship between mitral stenosis and TAVI has led to concerns regarding increased adverse cardiac outcomes during and after the procedure.

Unlabelled: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a less invasive alternative to an open surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for treating severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. Despite gaining widespread acceptance and approval for use in patients with high, moderate, and low surgical risk, the increasing use of TAVR has raised concerns about potential short- and long-term complications. We present the case of a 69-year-old female who underwent TAVR and subsequently presented to our outpatient cardiology clinic with progressively worsening dyspnea, orthopnea, and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea two years after the procedure.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is an increasingly common finding among patients presenting with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. While cardiovascular disease alone remains one of the most common causes of death among COVID-19 patients in the United States, its heightened prevalence with COVID-19 pneumonia has been well documented. Here we present the case of a 58-year-old male with an extensive cardiac history including coronary artery disease (CAD) with multiple drug-eluting stents (DES) placed and an episode of cardiac arrest requiring implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placement.

In this work, we present an optimized perturbative quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method for use in Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations. The model adopted is particularly tailored for the simulation of molecular systems in solution but can be readily extended to other applications, such as catalysis in enzymatic environments. The electrostatic coupling between the QM and MM systems is simplified by applying perturbation theory to estimate the energy changes caused by a movement in the MM system.

The computational demand of exact-search procedures has pressed the exploitation of parallel processing accelerators to reduce the execution time of many applications. However, this often imposes strict restrictions in terms of the problem size and implementation efforts, mainly due to their possibly distinct architectures. To circumvent this limitation, a new exact-search alignment tool (BowMapCL) based on the Burrows-Wheeler Transform and FM-Index is presented.

Background: HMMER is a commonly used bioinformatics tool based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to analyze and process biological sequences. One of its main homology engines is based on the Viterbi decoding algorithm, which was already highly parallelized and optimized using Farrar's striped processing pattern with Intel SSE2 instruction set extension.

Results: A new SIMD vectorization of the Viterbi decoding algorithm is proposed, based on an SSE2 inter-task parallelization approach similar to the DNA alignment algorithm proposed by Rognes.
