We present a flexible, scalable, and low-noise design scheme for coupling free-space light into a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) electronic-photonic integrated circuit. The proposed scheme utilizes arrays of grating couplers with compact, inverse-designed power combining networks to couple a distributed optical collection area to a single output waveguide, forming a photonic antenna. Fabrication density compliance is maintained regardless of the antenna size, and the collection area can be scaled while maintaining a fixed noise floor.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new single well injection withdrawal (SWIW) test was trialled at four landfills using the tracers lithium and deuterium, and by injecting clean water and measuring electrical conductivity. The aim of the research was to develop a practical test for measuring lateral contaminant transport to aid in the design of landfill flushing. Borehole dilution tests using dyes were undertaken prior to each SWIW test to determine background flow velocities.

This paper presents details of the methodology developed by the United Kingdom's Environmental Change Network for the long-term monitoring of macrophytes in rivers and streams. The methodology is based on techniques first proposed by the Standing Committee of Analysts (1987) and later adapted by the National Rivers Authority (NRA) and Environment Agency, but differs in splitting the surveyed 100 m stretch of water into sections to provide an objective measure of the frequency of occurrence of individual species in place of the more subjective estimation of cover. A pilot study of the ECN methodology took place at five sites in 1997.

The horses were fed a contaminated ration and presented clinical signs which were extremely varied in nature and severity. However, the range of signs, including anorexia, colic, weakness and ataxia bore similarities to those described in horses poisoned with the related ionophore monensin.
