Maintenance oxytocin in the immediate postpartum period: Frequency, determinants and practices in a tertiary maternity unit.

Objective: To prevent post-partum haemorrhage (PPH), national and international guidelines recommend the administration of a prophylactic injection of oxytocin after all vaginal births. Although additional maintenance oxytocin is not recommended in the immediate postpartum, its administration is quite common (30 % of French births in 2021). To assess in a single center, the frequency and determinants associated with the administration of maintenance oxytocin in immediate postpartum.

Does a three-hour delayed pushing benefit the mode of delivery?

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare two strategies for passive second stage management: three-hour vs two-hour delayed pushing after the diagnosis of full cervical dilation on mode of delivery and perinatal outcomes.

Study Design: This retrospective observational study included low-risk nulliparous women who reatched full cervical dilation under epidural analgesia with a single term fetus in cephalic presentation and normal fetal heart rate, between September and December 2016. Mode of delivery (spontaneous vaginal delivery versus operative delivery including cesarean section and instrumental vaginal delivery) and perinatal outcomes (post-partum hemorrhage, perineal lacerations, 5-min Apgar score, umbilical cord pH and transfer to neonatal intensive care unit) were compared between two maternity units: maternity unit A, where women could have up to a three-hour delayed pushing period after full cervical dilation diagnosis, and maternity unit B, where the delayed pushing period was a maximum of 2 h.

Down syndrome (DS), the most frequent chromosomic aberration, results from the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. The identification of genes which overexpression contributes to intellectual disability (ID) in DS is important to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms involved and develop new pharmacological therapies. Identification of 8-Hydroxyquinoline Derivatives That Decrease Cystathionine Beta Synthase (CBS) Activity.

CBS encodes a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme that catalyses the condensation of homocysteine and serine to form cystathionine. Due to its implication in some cancers and in the cognitive pathophysiology of Down syndrome, the identification of pharmacological inhibitors of this enzyme is urgently required. However, thus far, attempts to identify such molecules have only led to the identification of compounds with low potency and limited selectivity.

Atherosclerosis and obesity share pathological features including inflammation mediated by innate and adaptive immune cells. LXRα plays a central role in the transcription of inflammatory and metabolic genes. LXRα is modulated by phosphorylation at serine 196 (LXRα pS196), however, the consequences of LXRα pS196 in hematopoietic cell precursors in atherosclerosis and obesity have not been investigated.

Management of advanced colorectal cancer is challenging due to the lack of efficient therapy. The lipid A, OM-174 exhibited antitumor activity in colorectal cancer. We explored the anticancer efficacy of this compound in rats bearing large colorectal tumors in combination with the platinum derivative drugs oxaliplatin and cisplatin.

Biofilm-detached cells, a transition from a sessile to a planktonic phenotype: a comparative study of adhesion and physiological characteristics in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogenic bacterium widely investigated for its high incidence in clinical environments and its ability to form strong biofilms. During biofilm development, sessile cells acquire physiological characteristics differentiating them from planktonic cells. But after treatment with disinfectants, or to ensure survival of the species in hostile environments, biofilm cells can detach.

History of the health notebook in France: a stake for mothers, doctors and state.

The health notebook is a booklet distributed in France to mothers for making notes about the growth and health events of their children. The physicians who first adopted this initiative thought that mothers would be the best link between themselves and the health of babies. The oldest example discussed here came from a Montpellier medical doctor (1869).

The female condom: attitudes and experiences among HIV-positive heterosexual women and men.

The female condom is a potentially effective method for the prevention of HIV, other sexually transmitted disease, and pregnancy. This study describes attitudes toward and experiences with the female condom of 89 HIV-positive individuals (n = 56 women; n = 33 men) reporting heterosexual behavior. Qualitative interviews were conducted to inform the design and implementation of a cognitive-behavioral risk-reduction and health-promotion intervention.

[The debut of neonatal medicine in the XIX century].

This article presents the birth of neonatal medicine during the XIXth century. A first generation of physicians, marked by clinic, observes the newborns and proposes some neonatal cares which innovate. But it is for essential from the 1880's, around the generation of Pastorians formed in the "Ecole de la Maternité" of Paris (Tarnier) that a coherent procedure of neonatal cares is developed, with fight against infections, watching of feeding methods and warming up with incubators.

[State influence on the health of the child].

"This article follows the major historical steps with respect to the protection of the child aged less than three years in France and in Canada over the course of a century. Analysis focuses first on the motives behind increased intervention by political leaders on behalf of the child; next on the protection of the welfare of the mother and child; and finally on the evolution of demographic characteristics, in relation with processes of social and geographic differentiation. A remarkable convergence is observed between the two countries, despite veritable differences in political pressures and actions, traceable back to certain common structural traits, and linked with emerging patterns of international exchanges favouring the modelling of a new culture regarding childhood.

[Child mortality in the past: beyond appearances].

The purpose of the article is to give a short synthesis of the communications gathered in this volume dedicated to the topic of child mortality. It starts with the evocation of some key issues about sources and methods: the study of mortality before 5 years appears more difficult than expected. The trend of the decrease, more and more clear, though unlinear, suggests that climate, beyond environmental and socio-economic factors, may have been an underestimated factor so far.

The beta-blocker acebutolol down modulates the spontaneous polyclonal activation of lymphocytes in NZB X NZW lupus mice.

Acebutolol is a beta blocking agent that induces in C57Bl/6 mice a polyclonal activation of lymphocytes (PAL). In this study, its effect on cellular parameters of spontaneous PAL and lupus disease in NZB x NZW female mice is investigated. A significant reduction of PAL is found in 10-week-old mice after only five injections of 50 mg/kg/day of acebutolol.

Induction of thymic lymphosarcomas in C57BL/6 mice after inoculation of weakly oncogenic viruses associated with a sub-leukemogenic radiation exposure (1.75 Gy x 2).

B-ecotropic retroviruses arise frequently in old or irradiated C57BL/6 mice as a consequence of a genetic recombination between endogenous eco- and xenotropic retroviruses. They are weakly oncogenic and express a very low tropism for thymic cells. However, their activation by X-rays and the subsequent insertion of new proviral sequences in the cell genome of in vivo- and in vitro-passaged tumors suggest that they might play a role in radioleukemogenesis.

Thymic lymphosarcomas obtained by X-rays in association with a weakly leukemogenic virus: cellular studies.

The association in C57BL/6 mice of a subleukemogenic radiation dose (1.75 Gy X 2) which induces 7% of thymic lymphosarcomas (TL) with the injection of a weakly oncogenic B-tropic retrovirus responsible for 5% of TL resulted in a higher incidence of TL (31%) than expected from a simple cumulative effect when the viral injection preceded the irradiations (VX protocol). When virus was injected after irradiation (XV protocol) TL incidence (19%) was not significantly different from that of a cumulative phenomenon.

[Effect of methotrexate on glycolysis of leukemia L 1210 cells cultivated in vitro].

Methotrexate, at non lethal doses, alters the glycolysis of leukaemic L 1210 cells. Glucose uptake and lactate excretion are increased but lactate/glucose ratio remains constant. The activity of glycolytic enzymes in the cytoplasm is increased and the level of intracellular ATP is greatly enhanced.
