To make a drug work better, the active substance can be incorporated into a vehicle for optimal protection and control of the drug delivery time and space. For making the drug carrier, the porous metal-organic framework (MOF) can offer high drug-loading capacity and various designs for effective drug delivery performance, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Nevertheless, its degradation process is complex and not easily predictable, and the toxicity concern related to the MOF degradation products remains a challenge for their clinical translation.

In all biologically relevant media, proteins interact in the presence of surrounding ions, and such interactions are water-mediated. Water molecules play a crucial role in the restructuring of proteins in solution and indeed in their biological activity. Surface water dynamics and proton exchange at protein surfaces is investigated here using NMR relaxometry, for two well-known globular proteins, lysozyme and bovine serum albumin, with particular attention to the role of surface ions.

The objective of the method is to allow agitation and fast homogenization of liquid systems in NMR tubes, directly inside the NMR spectrometer. The setup makes it possible to record spectra of samples that are macroscopically not stable, as dispersions of large particles. It makes also possible to fasten the homogeneization of liquid during a reaction or a phase transition.

Oriented attachment of nanobricks into hierarchical multi-scale structures such as inorganic nanoclusters is one of the crystallization mechanisms that has revolutionized the field of nano and materials science. Herein, we show that the mosaicity, which measures the misalignment of crystal plane orientation between the nanobricks, governs their magneto-optical properties as well as the magnetic heating functions of iron oxide nanoclusters. Thanks to high-temperature and time-resolved millifluidic, we were able to isolate and characterize (structure, properties, function) the different intermediates involved in the diverse steps of the nanocluster's formation, to propose a detailed dynamical mechanism of their formation and establish a clear correlation between changes in mosaicity at the nanoscale and their resulting physical properties.

Background: Starting a second-line systemic treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common situation. The only therapeutic options in France are two broad-spectrum tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), regorafenib (REG) and cabozantinib (CBZ), but no comparative real-life studies are available.

Aim: To evaluate the progression-free survival (PFS) of patients treated with REG or CBZ, we investigated the disease control rate (DCR), overall survival (OS), and safety of both drugs.

How can the transport of fluids in a confined and complex mixed organic/inorganic matrix be far below the expected value from a topological aspect? A good example of this situation is oil shales. Oil and gas shales are source rocks in which organic matter has matured to form hydrocarbons. They exhibit a dual porous network formed by the intertwining of mineral and organic pores that leads to very low permeability.

Egg-tempera painting is a pictorial technique widely used in the Middle Ages, although poorly studied in its physico-chemical aspects until now. Here we show how NMR relaxometry and rheology can be combined to probe egg-tempera paints and shed new light on their structure and behavior. Based on recipes of the 15th century, model formulations with egg yolk and green earth have been reproduced to characterize the physicochemical properties of this paint at the mesoscopic and macroscopic scales.

Proteins function in crowded aqueous environments, interacting with a diverse range of compounds, and among them, dissolved ions. These interactions are water-mediated. In the present study, we combine field-dependent NMR relaxation (NMRD) and theory to probe water dynamics on the surface of proteins in concentrated aqueous solutions of hen egg-white lysozyme (LZM) and bovine serum albumin (BSA).

Hypothesis: The objective is to elucidate the multiscale dynamics of water within natural mixtures of minerals, green earth pigments that are mainly composed of phyllosilicates containing large amount of iron. In particular, the interaction of water with the different kinds of surfaces has to be probed. One issue is to examine the influence of surface type, basal or edge, on the dispersion quality.

Water-in-salts are a new family of electrolytes that may allow the development of aqueous Li-ion batteries. They have a structure that is reminiscent of ionic liquids, and they are characterized by a high concentration of ionic species. In this work, we study their transport properties and how they evolve with concentration by using molecular dynamic simulations.

Magnetic nanoparticles coated with protein-specific molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are receiving increasing attention thanks to their binding abilities, robustness, and easy synthesis compared to their natural analogues also able to target proteins, such as antibodies or aptamers. Acting as tailor-made recognition systems, protein-specific MIPs can be used in many in vivo nanomedicine applications, such as targeted drug delivery, biosensing, and tissue engineering. Nonetheless, studies on their biocompatibility and long-term fate in biological environments are almost nonexistent, although these questions have to be addressed before considering clinical applications.

We study the aggregation of charged plate-like colloids, Na-montmorillonite clays, in the presence of ionenes, oppositely charged polymer chains. The choice of the charged polymer allows tuning its linear charge density to match/mismatch the average charge separation on the clay surfaces. We assess the nanoscale structure of the aggregates formed by small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering.

Ion-specific effects at the protein surface are investigated here in light of the changes they infer to surface water dynamics, as observed by 1H NMR relaxation (at 20 MHz). Two well-known proteins, hen egg-white lysozyme (LZM) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), show qualitatively opposite trends in the transverse relaxation rate, R2(1H), along a series of different monovalent salt anions in the solution. Presence of salt ions increases R2(1H) in the case of lysozyme and diminishes it in the case of BSA.

The addition of simple salt to a solution of conjugated polyelectrolyte can lead to substantial changes in its optical properties caused by the conformational change of the polymer chain. The effect of the addition of alkali metal and tetraalkylammonium chlorides to solutions of lithium salt of poly(thiophen-3-ylacetic acid) is investigated by NMR. The fractions of free alkali metal counterions are in agreement with predictions of the cylindrical Poisson-Boltzmann cell model.

Aqueous solutions of polyelectrolytes are studied here by means of neutron scattering, with emphasis on backbone hydrophobicity and counter ion specific effects. Ionene polyelectrolytes with varying chain charge density and different counter ions are considered. Their neutron scattering data feature a number of aspects and trends that clearly deviate from the predictions of the existing theory.
