Evaluation of a Workplace Diabetes Prevention Program Delivered via Distance Learning: A Qualitative Study.

Little is known about how distance learning impacts delivery of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) despite a rapid shift to this platform during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency. We explored how a workplace DPP, delivered via distance learning, impacted knowledge, motivation, and behavioral skills of participants throughout the program. We conducted repeated qualitative interviews with distance learning participants at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months from September 2020 to July 2022.

Gravity- vs Wall Suction-Driven Large-Volume Thoracentesis: A Randomized Controlled Study.

Background: Prior studies have found no differences in procedural chest discomfort for patients undergoing manual syringe aspiration or drainage with gravity after thoracentesis. However, whether gravity drainage could protect against chest pain due to the larger negative-pressure gradient generated by wall suction has not been investigated.

Research Question: Does wall suction drainage result in more chest discomfort compared with gravity drainage in patients undergoing large-volume thoracentesis?

Study Design And Methods: In this multicenter, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial, patients with large free-flowing effusions of ≥ 500 mL were assigned at a 1:1 ratio to wall suction or gravity drainage.

Performance of VI-RADS in predicting muscle-invasive bladder cancer after transurethral resection: a single center retrospective analysis.

Purpose: To assess VIRADS performance and inter-reader agreement for detecting muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) following transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT).

Methods: An IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant, retrospective study from 2016 to 2020 included patients with bladder urothelial carcinoma who underwent MRI after TURBT, and cystectomy within 3 months without post-MRI treatments. Three radiologists blinded to pathology results independently reviewed MR images and assigned a VI-RADS score.

MRI, clinical, and radiomic models for differentiation of uterine leiomyosarcoma and leiomyoma.

Purpose: To assess the predictive ability of conventional MRI features and MRI texture features in differentiating uterine leiomyoma (LM) from uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS).

Methods: This single-center, IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant retrospective study included 108 patients (69 LM, 39 LMS) who had pathology, preoperative MRI, and clinical data available at our tertiary academic institution. Two radiologists independently evaluated 14 features on preoperative MRI.

Navigational Bronchoscopy versus Computed Tomography-guided Transthoracic Needle Biopsy for the Diagnosis of Indeterminate Lung Nodules: protocol and rationale for the VERITAS multicenter randomized trial.

Background: Lung nodule incidence is increasing. Many nodules require biopsy to discriminate between benign and malignant etiologies. The gold-standard for minimally invasive biopsy, computed tomography-guided transthoracic needle biopsy (CT-TTNB), has never been directly compared to navigational bronchoscopy, a modality which has recently seen rapid technological innovation and is associated with improving diagnostic yield and lower complication rate.

Delayed bronchial obstruction following esophageal stent placement: A case report and review of the literature.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma typically has a poor prognosis at the time of diagnosis. Consequently, palliation of symptoms is vital to disease management with a cornerstone for palliation being esophageal stent placement. Esophageal stents are associated with a variety of complications that may present immediately or long after stent placement is completed.

Spray Cryotherapy for Benign Large Airway Stenosis: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study of Safety and Practice Patterns.

Background: Benign airway stenosis (BAS) represents a significant burden on patients, providers, and healthcare systems. Spray cryotherapy (SCT) has been proposed as an adjunctive treatment to reduce BAS recurrence. We sought to examine safety and practice variations of the latest SCT system when used for BAS.

Identification and expression of short neuropeptide F and its receptors in the tick Ixodes ricinus.

In Europe, the tick Ixodes ricinus is the most important vector of numerous pathogens that are transmitted during blood feeding on their vertebrate hosts. To elucidate mechanisms controlling blood intake and associated transmission of pathogens we identified and described expression of short neuropeptide F (sNPF) and its receptors which are known to regulate feeding in insects. Using in situ hybridization (ISH) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) we stained numerous neurons producing sNPF in the central nervous system (CNS; synganglion), while a few peripheral neurons were detected anteriorly to the synganglion, and on the surface of the hindgut and leg muscles.

Differential expression of ITP and ITPL indicate multiple functions in the silkworm Bombyx mori.

Ion transport peptide (ITP) and a longer ITP-like (ITPL) are alternatively spliced insect neuropeptides involved in the regulation of development and water homeostasis. Using in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry, we determined site- and stage-specific expression of each peptide in Bombyx mori. Each peptide was differentially expressed, except for the prominent overlapping expression of both peptides in six pairs of the brain neurosecretory cells Ia.

Interreader Agreement and Intermodality Concordance of O-RADS US and MRI for Assessing Large, Complex Ovarian-Adnexal Cysts.

Purpose To assess interreader agreement of the Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System (O-RADS) and intermodality concordance between US and MRI for characterizing complex adnexal cysts measuring 5 cm or larger. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included 58 "complex cysts" measuring at least 5 cm in size observed at both US and MRI in 54 women (median age, 37 years ± 12 [SD]; seven postmenopausal women) between July 2017 and June 2020, identified from an electronic US database. A separate set of two blinded radiologists independently reviewed the US or MR images to assign the O-RADS category, and an adjudicator resolved discrepancies (a total of six readers).

Secondary IDH1 resistance mutations and oncogenic IDH2 mutations cause acquired resistance to ivosidenib in cholangiocarcinoma.

The mutant IDH1 inhibitor ivosidenib improves outcomes for patients with IDH1-mutated cholangiocarcinoma, but resistance inevitably develops. Mechanisms of resistance and strategies to overcome resistance are poorly understood. Here we describe two patients with IDH1 R132C-mutated metastatic cholangiocarcinoma who developed acquired resistance to ivosidenib.

Internal herniation of cecum through the foramen of Winslow and into the lesser sac: A case report.

An internal hernia is a protrusion of a visceral organ through a peritoneal or mesenteric opening within the abdominal or pelvic cavities. Internal hernias may present with a wide range of symptoms from mild digestive pain to acute abdomen. Internal hernias have a high morbidity and mortality rate often due to delayed diagnosis and progression of bowel obstruction to bowel ischemia or infarction.

Expression analysis of peptidergic enteroendocrine cells in the silkworm Bombyx mori.

Enteroendocrine cells (ECs) in the insect midgut respond to physiological changes in the intestine by releasing multiple peptides to control food intake, gastrointestinal activity and systemic metabolism. Here, we performed a comprehensive mapping of ECs producing different regulatory peptides in the larval midgut of Bombyx mori. In total, we identified 20 peptide genes expressed in different ECs in specific regions of the midgut.

Association between terminal pleural elastance and radiographic lung re-expansion after therapeutic thoracentesis in patients with symptomatic pleural effusion: a post-hoc analysis of a randomised trial.

Objectives: Recurrent symptomatic effusions can be durably managed with pleurodesis or placement of indwelling pleural catheters. Recent pleurodesis trials have largely relied on lung re-expansion on post-thoracentesis radiograph as an inclusion criterion rather than pleural elastance as determined by manometry, which is an important predictor of successful pleurodesis. We investigated the association between lung re-expansion on post-pleural drainage chest imaging and pleural physiology, with particular attention to pleural elastance over the final 200 mL aspirated.

Bleeding Risk With Combination Intrapleural Fibrinolytic and Enzyme Therapy in Pleural Infection: An International, Multicenter, Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Combination intrapleural fibrinolytic and enzyme therapy (IET) has been established as a therapeutic option in pleural infection. Despite demonstrated efficacy, studies specifically designed and adequately powered to address complications are sparse. The safety profile, the effects of concurrent therapeutic anticoagulation, and the nature and extent of nonbleeding complications remain poorly defined.

Perceptions of a virtual interview process for pharmacy residents during the COVID-19 pandemic: A multisite survey of residency candidates, preceptors, and residency program directors.

Purpose: To describe the perceptions of residency candidates, residency practitioners (current residents and preceptors), and residency program directors (RPDs) regarding a virtual interview process for pharmacy residency programs across multiple institutions.

Methods: In May 2021, an anonymous web-based questionnaire characterizing perceptions of the virtual interview process used during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was distributed to residency candidates, residency practitioners, and RPDs across 13 institutions. Quantitative responses measured on a 5-point Likert scale were summarized with descriptive statistics, and open-ended questions were analyzed using thematic qualitative methods.

Camptothecin, triptolide, and apoptosis inducer kit have differential effects on mitochondria in colorectal carcinoma cells.

Mitochondrial fission and fusion are required for cell survival, and several studies have shown an imbalance between fission and fusion in cancer. High levels of mitochondrial fusion are observed in drug-resistant tumor cells, whereas mitochondrial fission may be important in sensitizing tumor cells to chemotherapy drugs. Based on current knowledge, we hypothesized that different chemotherapeutics might differentially affect mitochondrial dynamics and energy production.

Uterine lipoleiomyoma: Case report and review of the literature.

Uterine lipoleiomyomas are variants of uterine leiomyomas that are often found incidentally, and do not require surgical intervention, unless symptomatic, and thus must be differentiated from lesions that need to be excised. While these tumors are benign, there have been reports of uterine lipoleiomyomas coexisting with other gynecological malignancies, metabolic diseases and abnormal estrogen statuses, as well as going through a malignant transformation into a liposarcoma. Here we present a 58-year-old female that presented with complaints of right upper quadrant abdominal pain.

Burnout Among Pharmacy Preceptors in Northern California.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the incidence of burnout syndrome among pharmacy preceptors and to identify predictors for the development of burnout in this population. This cross-sectional survey study examined burnout syndrome among pharmacy preceptors in Northern California. Preceptors were included if they self-identified as a preceptor to advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) students or to postgraduate pharmacy residents in their first year of residency.

Joining Forces: How to Coordinate Large, Multicenter Randomized Trials.

This article details the pros, cons, challenges/pitfalls, and elements required for the successful conduct of multicenter randomized trials, with specific focus on trials related to pleural diseases. Several networks dedicated to the multicenter study of important pleural conditions have developed, yielding practice-changing studies in pleural disease. This review describes the importance of multicenter trials, major elements required for the conduct of such trials, and lessons learned from the ongoing development of the Interventional Pulmonary Outcomes Group, a consortium of interventional pulmonologists dedicated to advancing diagnostic and management strategies in pleural, pulmonary parenchymal, and airway disease by generating high-quality multicenter evidence.

Prostate adenocarcinoma with osteolytic metastases: Case report and review of the literature.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies among males and commonly metastasizes to bone in advanced stages. Although such osseous metastases are typically osteoblastic, osteolytic lesions are also seen. Here, we present a case of an 81-year-old male with known prostate cancer who presented due to a pathologic right humerus fracture.
