Article Synopsis
  • Endometriosis is a non-cancerous condition affecting women that may be linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer, specifically certain types like endometrioid and clear cell subtypes.
  • Atypical endometriosis (AE) shows unusual microscopic features that complicate its diagnosis, necessitating thorough histological evaluation to identify its distinct architectural and cytologic forms.
  • Long-term studies indicate low rates of recurrence and malignancy in AE patients, but further research and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential to grasp the condition's cancer risk and improve diagnostic methods.

Preoperative sonographic staging in patients with suspected parametrial endometriosis is essential to plan surgical intervention and anticipate the need for a multidisciplinary approach, and thus optimize surgical outcome. The results of a recent meta-analysis suggest that there is a need to define more accurately the ultrasonographic criteria for parametrial involvement in endometriosis. This addendum to the International Deep Endometriosis Analysis (IDEA) consensus highlights the sonographic characteristics of the parametrium and identifies ultrasound techniques to diagnose deep endometriosis in this area.

The major causes of both morbidity and mortality in patients with acromegaly are cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The polymorphisms of the fat mass and obesity-associated gene ( are associated with obesity, as well as with an increased risk of CVDs. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship of risk alleles of four gene polymorphisms with selected parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism as well as with IGF-1 and GH levels in the group of patients with acromegaly compared to the control group.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are over 200 nucleotides long recently discovered RNA molecules that are not involved in the translation process. Accumulating evidence shows that H19 lncRNA is an important regulator of gene expression and its altered expression contributes to carcinogenesis. The aim of this review was to reveal current knowledge about H19 lncRNA and its impact on tumours of the endocrine system.

Introduction: Radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS) is a recently introduced non-ionising technology employed in the evaluation of osteoporosis. The aim of our study was to compare bone mineral density (BMD) in acromegaly patients and healthy controls by performing novel REMS densitometry. The second objective was to analyse the correlation between results of REMS and classical dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in acromegaly patients.

Invasion facilitation, whereby one species has a positive effect on the establishment of another species, could help explain the rapid colonisation shown by some freshwater invasive species, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We employed two-choice test arenas to test whether the presence of zebra mussel () could facilitate the establishment of the killer shrimp (). Killer shrimp preferred to settle on mats of zebra mussel, but this was unrelated to mat size, and was not different from attraction shown to artificial grass, suggesting that zebra mussel primarily provides substrate and refuge to the killer shrimp.

Background: Novel techniques in oncology provide new treatment opportunities but also introduce different patterns of side effects. Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) allows a shortened overall treatment time for early breast cancer either combined with whole breast radiotherapy (WBRT), or alone. Although the early side effects of IORT are well known, data on clinically important late side effects, which require medical intervention, are scarce.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the estimation of tumor size may improve endometrial cancer treatment. We conducted an observational study aimed at elucidating the association between tumor size and other universally accepted prognostic factors in order to identify suitable preoperative parameters which can guide surgery in a subgroup of early corpus endometrial cancer. We found that when tumor size increased, both stage and grading were significantly increased.

Commercially available Disperse Orange 29 (1a) and Disperse Red 1 (2a) were elaborated to glycoconjugated species, following a new version of a previously-described 'naturalisation' procedure. Glutamic acid was chosen to achieve a double glycoconjugation, which is essential to give to the original disperse dye a water solubility suitable for reaching optimal dyeing conditions. UV-vis plot of the 'naturalised' species showed negligible differences when compared to those of the commercial dyes.

During their life, cystic fibrosis (CF) patients may require thoracic surgical procedures for a number of reasons before undergoing lung transplantation. In the past, this has been considered to be a contraindication to lung transplantation. However, a meticulous surgical technique and careful intraoperative management allows one to perform the transplantation safely.
