Every innovation seeks to become a profitable business, with this considered to be the engine for economic prosperity. When an innovation is revolutionary, its long-term consequences can be revolutionary too. The Haber-Bosh process for ammonia synthesis is arguably the twentieth century's most significant innovation, and its importance to global food production and its impact on the environment are not expected to diminish over the coming decades.

Biomachining has become a promising alternative to micromachining metal pieces, as it is considered more environmentally friendly than their physical and chemical machining counterparts. In this research work, two strategies that contribute to the development of this innovative technology and could promote its industrial implementation were investigated: preservation of biomachining microorganisms () for their further use, and making valuable use of the liquid residue obtained following the biomachining process. Regarding the preservation method, freeze-drying, freezing, and drying were tested to preserve biomachining bacteria, and the effect of different cryoprotectants, storage times, and temperatures was studied.

The perception of colour and its subjective effects are key issues to designing safe and enjoyable bike lanes. This paper addresses the relationship between the colours of bike lane interventions-in particular pavement painting and intersection design-and the subjective evaluation of liking, visual saliency, and perceived safety related to such an intervention. Utilising images of three real bike lane intersections modified by software to change their colour (five in total), this study recruited 538 participants to assess their perception of all fifteen colour-design combinations.

Novel rehabilitation interventions have improved motor recovery by induction of neural plasticity in individuals with stroke. Of these, Music-supported therapy (MST) is based on music training designed to restore motor deficits. Music training requires multimodal processing, involving the integration and co-operation of visual, motor, auditory, affective and cognitive systems.

In the last decade, several studies have investigated the neuroplastic changes induced by long-term musical training. Here we investigated structural brain differences in expert pianists compared to non-musician controls, as well as the effect of the age of onset (AoO) of piano playing. Differences with non-musicians and the effect of sensitive periods in musicians have been studied previously, but importantly, this is the first time in which the age of onset of music-training was assessed in a group of musicians playing the same instrument, while controlling for the amount of practice.

Stroke induces a loss of neural function, but it triggers a complex amount of mechanisms to compensate the associated functional impairment. The present study aims to increase our understanding of the functional reshape of the motor system observed in chronic stroke patients during the preparation and the execution of movements. A cohort of 14 chronic stroke patients with a mild-to-moderate hemiparesis and 14 matched healthy controls were included in this study.

The efficient reuse of industrial by-products, such as the electric arc furnace (EAF) black slag, is still hindered by concern over their long-term behaviour in outdoor environments. The aim of this study was to develop an accelerated ageing method to simulate the long-term natural carbonation of EAF slag exposed to the elements. The degree of carbonation achieved in a freshly produced slag after accelerated ageing and in a slag used on a fifteen-year-old unpaved road was very similar.

Playing a musical instrument demands the engagement of different neural systems. Recent studies about the musician's brain and musical training highlight that this activity requires the close interaction between motor and somatosensory systems. Moreover, neuroplastic changes have been reported in motor-related areas after short and long-term musical training.

Background: Several recently developed therapies targeting motor disabilities in stroke sufferers have shown to be more effective than standard neurorehabilitation approaches. In this context, several basic studies demonstrated that music training produces rapid neuroplastic changes in motor-related brain areas. Music-supported therapy has been recently developed as a new motor rehabilitation intervention.

The bacteriostatic properties of carbon disulphide (CS₂) hamper its biodegradation in conventional biofilters. The response of four biofilters operating in downflow mode and reverse-flow mode was compared in a laboratory-scale plant treating CS₂ under sudden short-term changes in operating conditions. A process shutdown for 24 h, an inlet concentration increase and an interruption of the inlet air humidification for 48 h at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 240 s did not impact significantly on biodegradation performance, regardless of flow mode.

Background: We report the case of a chronic stroke patient (62 months after injury) showing total absence of motor activity evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of spared regions of the left motor cortex, but near-to-complete recovery of motor abilities in the affected hand.

Case Presentation: Multimodal investigations included detailed TMS based motor mapping, motor evoked potentials (MEP), and Cortical Silent period (CSP) as well as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of motor activity, MRI based lesion analysis and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) Tractography of corticospinal tract (CST). Anatomical analysis revealed a left hemisphere subinsular lesion interrupting the descending left CST at the level of the internal capsule.

Music-supported therapy (MST) has been developed recently to improve the use of the affected upper extremity after stroke. MST uses musical instruments, an electronic piano and an electronic drum set emitting piano sounds, to retrain fine and gross movements of the paretic upper extremity. In this paper, we first describe the rationale underlying MST, and we review the previous studies conducted on acute and chronic stroke patients using this new neurorehabilitation approach.

The influence of water irrigation on both the long-term and short-term performance of p-xylene biodegradation under several organic loading scenarios was investigated using an organic packing material composed of pelletised sawdust and pig manure. Process operation in a modular biofilter, using no external water supply other than the moisture from the saturated inlet air stream, showed poor p-xylene abatement efficiencies (≈33 ± 7%), while sustained irrigation every 25 days rendered a high removal efficiency (RE) for a critical loading rate of 120 g m(-3)h(-1). Periodic profiles of removal efficiency, temperature and moisture content were recorded throughout the biofilter column subsequent to each biofilter irrigation.

The question of how to obtain the best inocula for conventional biofilters arises when an acclimation/adaptation procedure is to be applied. Bearing in mind that no standardized procedure for acclimating inocula exists, certain preliminary strategies for obtaining an active inoculum from wastewater treatment sludge are proposed in this work. Toluene was the contaminant to be degraded.

Background: Dopamine is believed to be a key neurotransmitter in the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Several recent studies point to an association of the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) gene and this condition. More specifically, the 7 repeat variant of a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism in exon III of this gene is suggested to bear a higher risk for ADHD.

The physicochemical characterization of the peptide sequences E2 (39-53) and E2 (32-59) corresponding to the structural protein E2 of the GB virus C was done by studying their interaction with model membranes. The peptides showed surface activity concentration dependent when injected beneath a buffered solution. This tendency to accumulate into the air/water interface suggested a potential ability of these peptides to interact with bilayers.

The membrane-interacting properties of two potential epitopes of the GB virus C/Hepatitis G virus, located respectively at the regions (99-118) of the E2 structural protein and (440-460) of the NS3 non-structural protein were studied. Changes in the intrinsic fluorescence of Trp and Tyr residues after the addition of DPPC-LUV revealed that the peptide-membrane interaction was optimal above the gel-liquid crystalline transition temperature of the lipid. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that the E2 peptide incorporated into lipid bilayers perturbs the packing of lipids and affects their thermotropic properties.

Merocyanine 540 (MC540) has been used as external probe to determine the interaction of the peptide sequence 125-139 corresponding to the E2 protein of Hepatitis G virus, with lipid bilayers. The probe was incorporated into large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) or small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). When incorporated into bilayers, MC540 shows two absorption maxima corresponding to the monomer (570 nm) and dimer (530 nm) form of the probe.
