In recent years, significant research has been conducted on video-based human pose estimation (HPE). While monocular two-dimensional (2D) HPE has been shown to achieve high performance, monocular three-dimensional (3D) HPE poses a more challenging problem. However, since human motion happens in a 3D space, 3D HPE offers a more accurate representation of the human, granting increased usability for complex tasks like analysis of physical exercise.

Objective: Childhood food allergy is increasing in western societies. Preventing and managing food allergies is therefore essential for both parents and children. Given the limited previous research on parents' experiences of food allergy prevention in early childhood, this study aimed to develop a grounded theory to understand the experiences and interactions of families whose children are at risk of, or have been diagnosed with, food allergy.

Research on automatic evaluative responses to faces varying in emotional expression and ethnicity has yielded conflicting results. Some paradigms, like the Approach/Avoidance task, demonstrated interactive evaluation. In contrast, recent studies using the Evaluative Priming Task (EPT) yielded independent effects of expression and ethnicity.

Background: Comprehensive skin cancer screening was introduced in Germany in 2008. It is unclear whether subsequently observed changes in the epidemiology of malignant melanoma (MM), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) are due to the screening. Simulation models are used to compare different screening scenarios with each other and with observed incidence and mortality trends.

Subjective Social Status (SSS) reflects one's perceived rank within a given social structure and has been shown to be a unique correlate of physical and mental health. However, no research has been conducted to address populations of (recovering) critically ill patients. To shed light on the relationship between SSS and health in critically ill patients, we focus on survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

In the theoretical screening of Singlet Fission rates in molecular aggregates, often the frontier molecular orbital model for dimers is employed. However, the dimer approach fails to account for recent experimental findings that suggest singlet fission progresses through a further intermediate state featuring two spatially separated, spin-correlated triplets, specifically a (T···T) state. We address this limitation by generalizing the often used frontier molecular orbital model for singlet fission by incorporation of both separated Charge Transfer (C···T) and (T···T) states as well as mixed triplet-charge transfer states, delivering analytic expressions for the diabatic matrix elements.

  • Antibiotic therapy for group A streptococcus (GAS) pharyngitis is questioned, mainly for its limited benefits in reducing symptoms rather than preventing complications.
  • A study involved 88 children randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or amoxicillin, with results showing that the duration of fever was similar between both groups, indicating that placebo was not inferior to antibiotics.
  • The findings suggest that prescribing antibiotics for GAS pharyngitis may not be necessary, as there were no significant differences in pain intensity or complications between the treatment modalities.

Elevated sea surface temperatures are causing an increase in coral bleaching events worldwide, and represent an existential threat to coral reefs. Early studies of Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems (MCEs) highlighted their potential as thermal refuges for shallow-water coral species in the face of predicted 21 century warming. However, recent genetic evidence implies that limited ecological connectivity between shallow- and deep-water coral communities inhibits their effectiveness as refugia; instead MCEs host distinct endemic communities that are ecologically significant in and of themselves.

In computational chemistry, accurately predicting molecular configurations that exhibit specific properties remains a critical challenge. Its intricacies become especially evident in the study of molecular aggregates, where the light-induced functionality is tied to highly structure-dependent electronic couplings between molecules. Here, we present an efficient strategy for the targeted screening of the structural space employing a "functionality optimization" technique, in which a chosen descriptor, constrained by the ground state energy expression, is optimized.

Aim: To analyze the association of individual pre-ICU risk factors (obesity, physical and mental comorbidity, smoking status) on the long-term recovery process in survivors of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS; outcomes: health related quality of life, health care utilization; measured at 12, 24, and 36 months after ICU discharge).

Findings: Results show a possible causal link between pre-ICU risk factors and subsequent recovery of survivors of ARDS, especially with regard to mental health related quality of life.

Purpose: Identifying relevant pre-existing risk factors, such as mental health problems, will enable the identification of at-risk patients, thus aiding in the improvement of long-term healthcare for survivors of critical illness.

Peptide fibrillization is crucial in biological processes such as amyloid-related diseases and hormone storage, involving complex transitions between folded, unfolded, and aggregated states. We here employ light to induce reversible transitions between aggregated and nonaggregated states of a peptide, linked to the parathyroid hormone (PTH). The artificial light-switch 3-{[(4-aminomethyl)phenyl]diazenyl}benzoic acid (AMPB) is embedded into a segment of PTH, the peptide PTH, to control aggregation, revealing position-dependent effects.

Methicillin-resistant meningitis is commonly associated with surgical procedures that closely interact with the central nervous system; however, hematogenous spread via bacteremia is rarely reported. Here, we present a case of methicillin-resistant meningitis as a complication of a diabetic foot infection that disseminated into a bloodstream infection causing infective endocarditis, discitis, vertebral osteomyelitis, and meningitis that was successfully treated with intravenous daptomycin and rifampin.

Substituting CC with the isoelectronic BN units is a promising approach to modify the optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. While computational studies have already addressed trends in the electronic structure of the various isosteres, experimental data are still scarce. Here, the excited state spectroscopy and dynamics of 4,8-azaboranaphthalene were studied by picosecond time-resolved photoionization in a supersonic jet and analyzed with the aid of XMS-CASPT2 and time-dependent DFT calculations.

Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is often used to estimate human health and fitness status. More specifically, a range of parameters that express the variability in beat-to-beat intervals are calculated from electrocardiogram beat detections. Since beat detection may yield erroneous interval data, these errors travel through the processing chain and may result in misleading parameter values that can lead to incorrect conclusions.

With recent advancements in computer vision as well as machine learning (ML), video-based at-home exercise evaluation systems have become a popular topic of current research. However, performance depends heavily on the amount of available training data. Since labeled datasets specific to exercising are rare, we propose a method that makes use of the abundance of fitness videos available online.

When asked to judge or react to a facial emotional display of a person, people do not only take the emotion into account, but also other socially important features of the face, such as, for example, ethnicity (Kozlik & Fischer, 2020; Paulus & Wentura, 2014). Importantly, the emotion-related and nonemotion-related features are seemingly not (or not always) processed in a simple, additive manner, but are-in a more functional manner-integrated to provide an "amalgamated signal" on which individuals base their judgment and responses. Whereas Paulus and Wentura (2014) put forward a social-message account of this amalgamated signal, Kozlik and Fischer (2020) recently proposed a processing-conflict explanation.
