Mucociliary function keeps the normal sinuses free of drainage despite the fact that several of the sinus otia are not favorably located for gravitational drainage. This function of drainage is lost if the ostium becomes occluded or mucociliary function is impaired. The precise mechanisms of ostial occlusion remain to be elucidated.

Successful immunotherapy for Triatoma protracta-induced anaphylaxis.

A successful program of immunotherapy for Triatoma protracta-induced anaphylaxis was developed. This program included a new passive extract-antigen preparation standardized by RAST inhibition. This antigen facilitated the development of a reliable skin test protocol for in vivo diagnosis of Triatoma protracta allergy.

Rhinopharyngoscopy for the evaluation of allergic-immunologic disorders.

We have developed fiberoptic rhinopharyngoscopy as an important procedure for the evaluation of allergic and immunologic disorders. The procedure is useful for office practice, well tolerated and without serious complications. This paper outlines the technique for fiberoptic rhinopharyngoscopy, the pathology which can be identified, instruments available and our experience in nearly 100 patients.

M-mode omnidirectional recordings obtained from two-dimensional echocardiography.

A simple and inexpensive procedure to obtain M-mode tracings at any level or direction from two-dimensional echocardiograms is described. The method permits a complete M-mode visualization of 1) segmental motion of the cardiac walls, 2) structures difficult to reach with conventional procedures, and 3) two or more cardiac valves simultaneously.

Faecal chymotrypsin--a new photometric method using N-acetyl-L-tyrosine ethyl ester as substrate.

A photometric method for chymotrypsin is proposed, using the substrate N-acetyl-L-tyrosine ethyl ester, which is already used in the titrimetric procedure. Hydrolysis of the ester bond produces equal amounts of ethanol and acetyltyrosine, the latter being measured in the titrimetric method. The ethanol can easily be measured by the alcohol dehydrogenase method in the trichloroacetic acid supernatant.

[Determination of serum haptoglobin concentration in the acute phase of myocardial infarct by means of Mancini's simple radial immunodiffusion test].

In 14 patients with an according to the WHO-criteria definitive myocardial infarction quantitative serum haptoglobin course controls were performed in the first week after the pain event. The haptoglobin estimations were performed by means of simple radial immunodiffusion after Mancini on M-partigen plates. Up to the fifth day after the pain event an increase of the haptoglobin concentration could be established.

Etiological differences in patterns of psycholinguistic development of children of IQ 30 to 60.

We compared the psycholinguistic abilities of 131 mentally retarded children (IQs 30 to 60) of different etiological classifications (Down's syndrome, biologically brain damaged, environmentally caused retardation, unknown cause) and characterized each etiology according to the different patterns of psycholinguistic skills exhibited by the children. Level of skills was determined by the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, which was administered to each subject. Down's syndrome children exhibited significantly lower verbal-auditory skills than visual-motor skills.
