Novosorb Biodegradable Temporising Matrix (BTM) is an entirely synthetic dermal matrix that is gaining popularity in the management of challenging wounds. Not only does it provide a framework in which to grow an organised neodermis, it is also especially resistant to infection. Today, the matrix is available as a 2 mm thick open cell polyurethane foam with a non-degrading sealing membrane.

However, due to the traumatic nature of most nasal amputations, appropriate veins for anastomosis are difficult to find- complicating replantation. This is the first systematic review that compares peri operative and post-operative outcomes in arterial only versus arterial and venous anastomosis for nasal replantation.

Historical descriptions of its anatomy however paint the artery as small in calibre, with a restrictive angiosome and a high agenesis rate. This review examines the most contemporary anatomical data of the SIEA across clinical, cadaver and radiological modalities and balances the promise of encouraging anatomical data against the clinical practicalities of consistently and safely raising an SIEA flap.
