Article Synopsis
  • Exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) from telecommunications is rising and while there are guidelines for human safety, there aren't any international standards for protecting animals and plants.
  • There is ongoing debate about whether existing human guidelines are sufficient to safeguard the environment, especially with newer technologies like 5G raising public concern.
  • A systematic map has been created to compile all evidence on how anthropogenic RF EMF impacts plants and animals, highlighting knowledge gaps and suggesting areas for future research.

Article Synopsis
  • There has been a notable rise in mobile phone usage over the past 30 years, leading to speculation about its link to head cancers, particularly in salivary glands.
  • A study analyzed cancer incidence trends from 1982 to 2016 in Australia, utilizing statistical methods to evaluate the potential impacts of increasing mobile phone use.
  • The findings revealed stable rates of parotid gland cancer before 2006, with a decrease in men and an increase in women from 2006 onwards; however, the overall results suggest that mobile phone usage did not contribute to these cancer trends.

The increased use of radiofrequency (RF) fields above 6 GHz, particularly for the 5 G mobile phone network, has given rise to public concern about any possible adverse effects to human health. Public exposure to RF fields from 5 G and other sources is below the human exposure limits specified by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). This state-of-the science review examined the research into the biological and health effects of RF fields above 6 GHz at exposure levels below the ICNIRP occupational limits.

Background: With the roll-out of new technologies such as 5G, there has been renewed community concern regarding the adequacy of research on possible health effects from associated radiofrequency radiation, mainly in the millimetre wave (MMW) band.

Objective: We conducted a meta-analysis of in vitro and in vivo studies investigating bioeffects of MMWs at low exposure levels.

Methods: We identified 107 in vitro and in vivo studies investigating MMWs and biological effects in which the power density employed has been below 100 W/m, which is below the current standards for occupational local exposures.
