Introduction: Oxidative stress considered to be the main cause of male infertility. Surgical treatment of varicocele and elimination of the inflammatory process in the male accessory glands can help reduce the level of oxidative stress, however, in most cases, antioxidant therapy is additionally prescribed. Currently, much attention is paid to regulatory peptides as a component of antioxidant therapy due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Meromictic lakes usually harbour certain prevailing anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria in their anoxic zone, such as the purple sulfur bacterium (PSB) sp. LSW (hereafter LSW) in Lake Shunet, Siberia. PSBs have been suggested to play a vital role in carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycling at the oxic-anoxic interface of stratified lakes; however, the ecological significance of PSBs in the lake remains poorly understood.

Most of Earth's bacteria have yet to be cultivated. The metabolic and functional potentials of these uncultivated microorganisms thus remain mysterious, and the metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) approach is the most robust method for uncovering these potentials. However, MAGs discovered by conventional metagenomic assembly and binning are usually highly fragmented genomes with heterogeneous sequence contamination.

Article Synopsis
  • Climate change has altered the thermal structure of lakes, impacting both surface and deep water temperatures, though surface changes are more documented than deepwater trends.
  • This study presents a comprehensive dataset of vertical temperature profiles from 153 lakes, starting from as early as 1894, allowing for a deeper analysis of long-term trends.
  • The researchers also collected various geographic and water quality data to understand how different factors influence the thermal structures of these lakes amid ongoing environmental changes.

Lake Uchum is a newly defined meromictic lake in Siberia with clear seasonal changes in its mixolimnion. This study characterized the temporal dynamics and vertical profile of bacterial communities in oxic and anoxic zones of the lake across all four seasons: October (autumn), March (winter), May (spring), and August (summer). Bacterial richness and diversity in the anoxic zone varied widely between time points.

A halotolerant, psychrotolerant and methylotrophic methanogen, strain SY-01, was isolated from the saline Lake Tus in Siberia. Cells of strain SY-01 were non-motile, cocci and 0.8-1.

Microorganisms are critical to maintaining stratified biogeochemical characteristics in meromictic lakes; however, their community composition and potential roles in nutrient cycling are not thoroughly described. Both metagenomics and metaviromics were used to determine the composition and capacity of archaea, bacteria, and viruses along the water column in the landlocked meromictic Lake Shunet in Siberia. Deep sequencing of 265 Gb and high-quality assembly revealed a near-complete genome corresponding to sp.

Ultrahigh energy cosmic ray air showers probe particle physics at energies beyond the reach of accelerators. Here we introduce a new method to test hadronic interaction models without relying on the absolute energy calibration, and apply it to events with primary energy 6-16 EeV (E_{CM}=110-170  TeV), whose longitudinal development and lateral distribution were simultaneously measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The average hadronic shower is 1.

We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8±0.

According to the results of seasonal monitoring, in 2007-2013 purple sulfur bacteria morphologically similar to Thiocapsa sp. Shira_1 (AJ633676 in EMBL/GenBank) predominated in the anoxygenic phototrophic community of the water column of the meromictic Lake Shira (Khakassia, Siberia). No pronounced seasonal periodicity in the total cell number in the water column was revealed during the period of observation.

Meromictic lakes located in landlocked steppes of central Asia (~2500 km inland) have unique geophysiochemical characteristics compared to other meromictic lakes. To characterize their bacteria and elucidate relationships between those bacteria and surrounding environments, water samples were collected from three saline meromictic lakes (Lakes Shira, Shunet and Oigon) in the border between Siberia and the West Mongolia, near the center of Asia. Based on in-depth tag pyrosequencing, bacterial communities were highly variable and dissimilar among lakes and between oxic and anoxic layers within individual lakes.

Energy-dependent patterns in the arrival directions of cosmic rays are searched for using data of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We investigate local regions around the highest-energy cosmic rays with [Formula: see text] eV by analyzing cosmic rays with energies above [Formula: see text] eV arriving within an angular separation of approximately 15[Formula: see text]. We characterize the energy distributions inside these regions by two independent methods, one searching for angular dependence of energy-energy correlations and one searching for collimation of energy along the local system of principal axes of the energy distribution.

Strain AIS(T), an aerobic halophilic, Gram-reaction-negative, heterotrophic bacterium isolated from the water of Shira Lake in Khakasia, southern Siberia, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Our analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that 'Aliidiomarina haloalkalitolerans', 'Aliidiomarina sanyensis', Idiomarina maris and AIS(T) formed a distinct lineage. The sequence similarities between AIS(T) and the type strains of species of the genera Idiomarina and Aliidiomarina were 91.

The anoxygenic phototrophic bacterial community of the brackish meromictic Lake Shira (Khakassia) was investigated in August 2001, July 2002, and February-March 2003. In all the periods of investigation, the prevailing microorganisms were purple sulfur bacteria similar to Lamprocystis purpurea in morphology and pigment composition. Their highest number (3 x 10(5) cells/ml) was recorded in July 2002 at the depth of 15 m.

Seasonal studies of the anoxygenic phototrophic bacterial community of the water column of the saline eutrophic meromictic Lake Shunet (Khakassia) were performed in 2002 (June) and 2003 (February-March and August). From the redox zone down, the lake water was of dark green color. Green sulfur bacteria predominated in every season.

The biogeochemical and molecular biological study of the chemocline and sediments of saline meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet (Khakass Republic, Russia) was performed. A marked increase in the rates of sulfate reduction and methanogenesis was revealed at the medium depths of the chemocline. The rates of these processes in the bottom sediments decreased with depth.

Microbiological and isotopic-geochemical investigations of the brackish meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet were performed in the steppe region of Khakasia in winter. Measurements made with a submersed sensor demonstrated that one-meter ice transmits light in a quantity sufficient for oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis. As in the summer season, in the community of phototrophic bacteria found in Lake Shira, the purple sulfur bacteria Amoebobacter purpureus dominated, whereas, in Lake Shunet, the green sulfur bacteria Pelodictyon luteolum were predominant.

A short survey and critical analysis of previously proposed criteria for growth control of populations of microorganisms in the chemostat are presented. Based on the analysis of a mathematical model of the steady-state of a microbial population in the chemostat, an adequate control criterion is suggested, along with a method to identify the corresponding regulating factors. The new control criterion is expressed as a product of the factor transformation coefficient and the biomass sensitivity coefficient (SC) with respect to the change of the factor at the chemostat inlet (referred to in the sequel as the biomass SC).
