Age is a major predictor of developmental processes and disease risk, but humans and model systems (e.g., mice) differ substantially in the pace of development and aging.

The use of extracorporeal organ support systems (ventilation, ECMO) is common. A therapeutic principle for these diseases is the removal of disease-causing antibodies.

When choices are expressed with a motor response, these actions are preceded by reductions in the power of oscillations in the alpha and beta range in motor cortices. For unimanual movements, these reductions are greater over the hemisphere contralateral to the response side.

In the A(X)B rule, A and B items are linked, but assigned to different positional categories and separated by distractor items. Open questions are how widespread is the ability to extract positional regularities from A(X)B patterns, which strategies are used to encode positional regularities and whether individuals exhibit preferences for absolute or relative position encoding.

Objective: This study served to establish German norms for the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire self-report (SDQ-S) by using data from a representative epidemiological sample from the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS study). Although the German version of the SDQ has been widely used and normative data for the parent version (SDQ-P) exist, no German norms for the self-report version have been reported, so that practitioners had to rely on the available British norms. In addition, we investigated whether sex- and age-specific norms are necessary.

As a result, many countries have initiated a debate on the introduction of explicit priority regulations based on medical, economic and person-based criteria, or have already established such regulations. Previous research on individual attitudes towards setting health care priorities based on medical and economic criteria has revealed consistent results, whereas studies on the use of person-based criteria have generated controversial findings.

However, the literature on PRT in neotropical primates is limited. Here PRT data from owl monkeys and squirrel monkeys are presented, including the length of time to train subjects to target, present hand, and present foot, important responses that can be used to aid in health inspection and treatment.

RON receptor activation is also associated with resistance to tamoxifen treatment in breast cancer cells. Nrf2 is a positive regulator of cytoprotective genes.

The identification of molecular targets that contribute to HIF-1alpha-mediated invasion is under intensive investigation. We have analyzed the role of recepteur d'origine nantais (RON), a tyrosine kinase receptor for macrophage-stimulating protein (MSP) that plays a role in breast cancer cell invasion as one of the molecular targets of HIF-1alpha.

Hypoxia can slow development, kill embryos and induce premature hatching. For terrestrial eggs of red-eyed treefrogs, the embryonic period can extend approximately 50% longer than development to hatching competence, and development is synchronous across perivitelline oxygen levels (PO2) ranging from 0.

Methods: We identified persons with no adenomas on baseline screening colonoscopy who returned at 5 years for follow-up colonoscopy. Findings were categorized according to the most advanced lesion present: no polyp, a hyperplastic polyp, a tubular adenoma less than 1 cm in diameter, an advanced adenoma (a tubular adenoma > or = 1 cm in diameter or a polyp with villous histologic features or high-grade dysplasia), or a cancer.
RON (recepteur d'origine nantais), a tyrosine kinase receptor for macrophage-stimulating protein (MSP) was implicated in tumor progression. However, it was not investigated how this important oncogene is regulated. We show that MSP promotes invasion of MDA MB 231 and MDA MB 468 but not MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Background: Results of liver transplantation (LT) for hepatitis B (HBV) have improved in the past decade but recently drug resistance has been described, the clinical significance of which is unclear. The aims of this study were to evaluate outcomes of LT for HBV and describe the prevalence of drug resistance.
Methods: A retrospective chart analysis and review of the organ transplant database was performed to identify all patients transplanted for HBV between December 1982 and April 2004 who survived more than 3 months.
Patients with recurrent hepatitis C (HCV) after liver transplantation (OLT) are often treated with interferon and ribavirin in an attempt to eradicate HCV and prevent cirrhosis. We report four patients who developed de novo cryptogenic hepatitis following sustained eradication of recurrent HCV, which led to decompensated liver disease in two patients, both of whom required listing for retransplantation. Between September 2000 and October 2001, 38 consecutive patients with recurrent HCV were treated with interferon alpha 2b and ribavirin, of whom eight patients (21%) developed a sustained response to HCV eradication.

Given the promising results reported with pegylated interferon and ribavirin for hepatitis C, we were interested in evaluating the effectiveness of this treatment in liver transplant recipients with recurrent hepatitis C (HCV).
Methods: Between November 2001 and September 2002, patients with recurrent HCV were screened to determine if they were eligible for treatment.
Background: Colonoscopic screening for colorectal cancer has been suggested because sigmoidoscopy misses nearly half of persons with advanced proximal neoplasia.
Objective: To create a clinical index to stratify risk for advanced proximal neoplasia and to identify a subgroup with very low risk in which screening sigmoidoscopy alone might suffice.
Design: Cross-sectional study.
An open system of delivery of supplemental oxygen was compared with a closed system during endotracheal suction (ETS) at zero end-expiratory pressure (ZEEP) and 10 cm H2O positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Four protocols in a 2 x 2 design were administered in random order to 12 anesthetized and oleic acid-injured animals. Statistically significant differences were found between protocols for arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), airway pressure (Paw), right atrial pressure (Pra), intrathoracic pressure (Pit), arterial pressure, and right ventricular afterload.

Methods: We reviewed the procedure and pathology reports for 906 consecutive persons 40 to 49 years of age who voluntarily participated in an employer-based screening-colonoscopy program. The histologic features of lesions that were identified and removed on endoscopy were categorized according to those of the most advanced lesion removed proximally (up to the junction of the splenic flexure and the descending colon) and the most advanced lesion removed distally.
Background And Methods: The clinical significance of a distal colorectal polyp is uncertain. We determined the risk of advanced proximal neoplasia, defined as a polyp with villous features, a polyp with high-grade dysplasia, or cancer, among persons with distal hyperplastic or neoplastic polyps as compared with the risk among persons with no distal polyps. We analyzed data from 1994 consecutive asymptomatic adults (age, 50 years or older) who underwent colonoscopic screening for the first time between September 1995 and December 1998 as part of a program sponsored by an employer.

The classification of APN usually encompasses the nurse practitioner (NP), certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and clinical nurse specialist (CNS). NP, CRNA, and CNM roles have been more clearly delineated than the CNS roles.

Patient and family education is an important component of the organ transplant programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The Medical Center is in the process of planning a new transplant center which will employ the family-centered, educationally-intensive cooperative care concept. This approach was chosen as the model for the delivery of care at the Lied Transplant Center because it emphasizes efficient, effective clinical care by requiring active participation by the family or essential other, thereby better preparing both the patient and the family for the transition to home and to the community.
