Introduction: Objective evaluation of sleep bruxism (SB) using whole-night polysomnography (PSG) is relevant for diagnostic confirmation. Nevertheless, the PSG electromyogram (EMG) scoring may give rise to controversy, particularly when audiovisual monitoring is not performed. Therefore, the present study assessed the concordance between two independent scorers to visual SB on a PSG performed without audiovisual monitoring.

Introduction: Studies that assess the upper airways in sleep-related breathing disorders have been performed only in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome who seek medical attention. Therefore, in addition to the need for population studies, there are no data on the orofacial-cervical physical examination in subjects with upper airway resistance syndrome.

Objectives: To compare the orofacial-cervical examination between volunteers with upper airway resistance syndrome and without sleep-related breathing disorders.

Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exhibit reduced quality of life (QoL) due to their daytime symptoms that restricted their social activities. The available data for QoL after treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) are inconclusive, and few studies have assessed QoL after treatment with speech therapy or other methods that increase the tonus of the upper airway muscles or with a combination of these therapies. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of speech therapy alone or combined with CPAP on QoL in patients with OSA using three different questionnaires.

Slow wave oscillations in the electroencephalogram (EEG) during sleep may reflect both sleep need and intensity, which are implied in homeostatic regulation. Adenosine is strongly implicated in sleep homeostasis, and a single nucleotide polymorphism in the adenosine deaminase gene (ADA G22A) has been associated with deeper and more efficient sleep. The present study verified the association between the ADA G22A polymorphism and changes in sleep EEG spectral power (from C3-A2, C4-A1, O1-A2, and O2-A1 derivations) in the Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO) sample from São Paulo, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers conducted a prospective randomized study with COPD patients suspected of having OSAS, using the Stardust device at home and in a sleep lab while performing standard polysomnography for comparison.
  • * Although there was some agreement between the Stardust device and polysomnography results, the study concluded that the high number of recording failures diminishes the reliability of the portable device for diagnosing OSAS in COPD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is common in older adults, and at-home portable monitoring (PM) may serve as a viable alternative to the standard sleep study known as polysomnography (PSG) for diagnosing this condition.
  • * The study involved patients over 65 with suspected OSAS who underwent two types of evaluations: at-home PM and simultaneous PM with PSG, allowing comparisons of the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) from each method.
  • * Results showed that PM accurately diagnosed OSAS in elderly patients, with strong correlations between the different AHI values, indicating that PM can be effectively used instead of PSG for high-risk older adults.*
