Trends in referrals to liaison psychiatry teams from UK emergency departments for patients over 65.

Introduction: The number of people over the age of 65 attending Emergency Departments (ED) in the United Kingdom (UK) is increasing. Those who attend with a mental health related problem may be referred to liaison psychiatry for assessment. Improving responsiveness and integration of liaison psychiatry in general hospital settings is a national priority.

Retrograde ureteric stent exchange in the female oncology patient by interventional radiology: the experience of a single tertiary referral centre.

Background: Double-J stents are used to treat ureteric outflow obstruction. Deployed in antegrade or retrograde fashion, they relieve ureteric obstruction in several conditions including ureteric calculi, strictures and malignancy. Traditionally exchanged in an operating theatre (OT) under general anaesthetic (GA), more recently described is the technique of using fluoroscopic guidance under sedation.

The native form of pyruvate carboxylase is an alpha4 tetramer but the tetramerisation domain of each subunit is currently unknown. To identify this domain we co-expressed yeast pyruvate carboxylase 1 isozyme (Pyc1) with an N-terminal myc tag, together with constructs encoding either the biotin carboxylase (BC) domain or the transcarboxylase-biotin carboxyl carrier domain (TC-BCC), each with an N-terminal 9-histidine tag. From tag-affinity chromatography experiments, the subunit contacts within the tetramer were identified to be primarily located in the 55 kDa BC domain.

La belle indifférence in conversion symptoms and hysteria: systematic review.

Background: La belle indifférence refers to an apparent lack of concern shown by some patients towards their symptoms. It is often regarded as typical of conversion symptoms/hysteria.

Aims: To determine the frequency of la belle indifférence in studies of patients with conversion symptoms/hysteria and to determine whether it discriminates between conversion symptoms and symptoms attributable to organic disease.

Objective: Paralysis, seizures, and sensory symptoms that are unexplained by organic disease are commonly referred to as "conversion" symptoms. Some patients who receive this diagnosis subsequently turn out to have a disease that explains their initial presentation. We aimed to determine how frequently this misdiagnosis occurs, and whether it has become less common since the widespread availability of brain imaging.
