Unusual Causes of Death Due to Constipation.

Constipation is found in individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and cerebral palsy. Although generally a benign condition, it may lead to life-threatening intestinal obstruction, with or without volvulus, or to stercoral ulceration with enteritis and/or perforation. Two unusual cases of lethal chronic constipation are reported to demonstrate other very rare fatal mechanisms that may occur.

Post mortem damage by predators varies with geography, climate, and location of cadavers. Frequently encountered facultatively parasitic terrestrial organisms include fly larvae (maggots), ants and beetles. This report describes for the first time opportunistic post mortem damage caused by the terrestrial flatworm Platydemus manokwari de Beauchamp,1963 (New Guinea Flatworm) (phylum Platyhelminthes: order Tricladida: suborder Continenticola: family Geoplanidae) to exposed skin of a body located in a tropical urban location.

Aim: To clarify the possible role of accidental asphyxiation/suffocation for infants in shared sleeping situations.

Methods: As it has recently been shown that there is an association between maternal obesity and sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) an index was calculated by dividing parental body mass index (BMI) by the shared sleeping surface area.

Results: A much higher index was derived for an obese individual on a narrow sleeping area such as a sofa (50) compared to a thin adult on a queen-sized mattress (5).

The under-recognition and significance of frailty syndrome - a geriatric and forensic conundrum.

Frailty syndrome occurs in elderly individuals with declining muscle mass (sarcopenia), unintentional weight loss, decreasing physical strength and activity, exhaustion, and slow ambulation. It significantly increases morbidity and mortality with cardiovascular, renal disease and neurological disorders, osteoporosis and fractures, endocrine and immunological dysfunction and a variety of malignancies. It is increasing in incidence as the population ages.

Fatal exulceratio simplex (dieulafoy lesion) - a case report and review.

A 64-year-old man involved in a low-speed vehicle crash was found at autopsy to have altered blood extending from his stomach to his rectum. Within the stomach a small arterial vessel opened onto the mucosa of the posterior wall of the antrum adjacent to the pylorus with no adjacent mucosal ulceration or malignancy. Histologic sections showed the typical appearances of a Dieulafoy lesion with a tortuous small arteriole within the submucosa extending to the gastric lumen with an overlying cap of recently formed clot.

Circumstances and Pathological Findings in Civilian Helicopter-Related Fatalities.

Helicopters are used worldwide in a range of commercial and private industries and are particularly useful in northern Australia due to the sparse population scattered over large distances with remote regions difficult to access by any other means of transport. Tree failure, or summer branch drop, refers to situations where large branches or whole trees may unexpectedly drop on unsuspecting victims. On occasion, this involves vehicles impacted by falling overhanging trees or branches. To study this phenomenon further review of the Forensic Science SA, Adelaide, Australia, database and an internet news search were undertaken over a 20 year period from March 2004 to February 2024 for all cases where unexpected accidental deaths in South Australia had been caused by falling branches or trees.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, is an entity characterized by neurological deficits that are thought to arise from repetitive episodes of blunt head trauma. It has gained considerable attention recently in those who have engaged in contact sports. However, given that it is caused by mechanical cerebral strain from nonspecific blunt impact, it seems reasonable to assume that it could arise from a multitude of causes, such as craniocentric domestic violence.

Difficulties associated with the interpretation of postmortem toxicology.

While postmortem (PM) toxicology results provide valuable information towards ascertaining both the cause and manner of death in coronial cases, there are also significant difficulties associated with the interpretation of PM drug levels. Such difficulties are influenced by several pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors including PM redistribution, diffusion, site-to-site variability in drug levels, different drug properties and metabolism, bacterial activity, genetic polymorphisms, tolerance, resuscitation efforts, underlying conditions, and the toxicity profile of cases (i.e.

Research on infants who have allegedly succumbed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been of variable quality over the years. Even now peer-reviewed papers are being published on cases termed 'SIDS' without autopsies having been performed, despite this being a requirement of the three major definitions for over five decades. Clearly cases used in earlier research studies could not have complied with the requirements of as-yet unpublished definitions/guidelines.

The role of alcohol in infant cosleeping deaths.

The well-established epidemiological and neuropathological differences between infants who die alone compared to those in shared sleeping environments indicate that these cohorts have differences. Risk factors in both situations depend on both exogenous and endogenous factors. Although parental consumption of alcohol continues to be cited as a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) it is difficult to understand how a substance which impairs parental consciousness rather than infant arousal could contribute to SIDS.

Identifying and documenting osseous trauma from shark attacks by post mortem CT examination and autopsy.

A 15-year-old male was attacked by a large white shark while surfing. CT examination revealed an above-knee amputation of the right lower extremity with stripping of soft tissues from the groin distally. 3-dimensional volume rendering did not show any fragments of shark teeth but did reveal linear gouges, areas of shaving of cortical bone and an inverted 'V'-shaped defect at the distal margin of the femoral shaft.

A 19-year-old male was found dead in his apartment. At autopsy he was morbidly obese (Body mass index; BMI - 40.5) with multiple areas of velvety pigmented thickening of the skin in folds around the neck, in the axillae, in the inframammary regions, over the anterior waistline and groin regions and over the dorsal aspects of the feet.
