Support from management is very important in order to avoid stressful situations and conflicts that are not conducive to good work organization.

INTRODUCTION: A diverse group of neuroscience nurse experts discussed stroke nursing research at the 5th International Neuroscience Nursing Research Symposium. Panel experts from Singapore, India, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Malawi, Germany, Palestine, Kenya, Japan, and the United States collaborated to examine similarities and differences in nurse-led stroke research conducted in their home countries. This article reflects panel insights on challenges and opportunities for nurse-led stroke research.

Critical Care Nursing in the Philippines: Historical Past, Current Practices, and Future Directions.

This article provides a brief background on critical care nursing in the Philippines, its trend on current practice, and its implication and future direction. An overview is given on the milieu and processes inherent in the critical care unit with the intensive care unit setup taken as its exemplar. The roles and responsibilities of critical care nurses within these units and nature of common issues within their practice is explored.

Advanced survey of tuberculosis transmission in a complex socioepidemiologic scenario with a high proportion of cases in immigrants.

Background: An increase in the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in immigrants has changed the socioepidemiologic scenario in Spain. It is generally assumed that TB in immigrants is the result of importation of infection, but the role of recent transmission is rarely considered. Standard contact tracing is not suitable for the survey of transmission in this complex scenario.

Impact of laboratory cross-contamination on molecular epidemiology studies of tuberculosis.

Laboratory cross-contamination by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is known to be responsible for the misdiagnosis of tuberculosis, but its impact on other contexts has not been analyzed. We present the findings of a molecular epidemiology analysis in which the recent transmission events identified by a genotyping reference center were overestimated as a result of unnoticed laboratory cross-contamination in the original diagnostic laboratories.

Pleurodesis in malignant pleural effusions: a randomized study of tetracycline versus bleomycin.

Malignant pleural effusions are commonly managed with tube thoracostomy drainage followed by chemical pleurodesis. Both tetracycline and bleomycin have been shown to be effective for intrapleural instillation, although neither agent has definitively proved advantages over the other. The aim of the present study was to compare these two agents in terms of response rate and toxicity profile.

[Treatment of asthmatic crises at a hospital emergency service. Are the protocols followed?].

Improper assessment and treatment of asthma attacks have been identified as causes of increased morbidity and mortality: several pneumological societies have therefore created and published guidelines for facilitating decision making and for preventing unnecessary failures of therapy. The objective of this study was to examine emergency department compliance with such guidelines in our hospital, comparing the performance of pneumologists and other specialists. We reviewed the records of 117 patients treated for acute asthma attacks in 1994 (87 women and 30 men, mean age 46 years); 37 patients were treated by pneumologists and 80 by other specialists.

Disseminated pulmonary granulomas after intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy.

Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has been shown to be an effective treatment of superficial bladder cancer. However, it is not free of side-effects and complications. We present the case of a 62-year-old man who developed disseminated pulmonary granulomas after local BCG immunotherapy for recurrent papillary bladder cancer.
